Looking to spend $400-$700 for a decent notebook to be used primarily for software development and graphics. Need some speed and horsepower, and durability. These things typically last me about five years, and this one here (a Sony Vaio) is nearing the end of the line.
Brands you'd recommend? Lenovo is highly regarded but very, very Chinese. I'd like to stay away from that. And I hate Apple with a passion.
This will be running Linux.

I don’t believe there are any laptops that are not made in China . My Ma sent my daughter a birthday card ( American Greetings ) the other day and it was made in China .

I like Toshiba laptops, but don’t know where they are made.

I’ve heard good thinga about Falcon-Northwest, but their products are considerably more expensive than your preferred price-range.

Even if you found a laptop that was not “made in China”, the parts probably will have been. I use Dell but I would never recommend them.

I’ve honestly never seen a laptop not made in China, but I always had good luck with HP laptops.
Sam’s Club has an HP laptop online for $480 (if you’re a member) and it has 6gb of memory and a 1 Terabyte (1000 GB) HD.

If you want a laptop not made in China, you'll need to make it yourself (with all Chinese parts). Seriously.
It's almost funny you even asked.

ASUS is a Taiwanese company, so technically, they’re not chinese.

Asus is Taiwan not PRC, to be fair. Taiwan is friendly and I’m comparing ASUS in my price range to the Lenovos I’ve already singled out.

Let’s give credit where it’s due. The UNIONS have, again, successfully sent work outside of this country. Gotta love them.

All include hardware components that are made in China.
