Amusingly, I don’t drink as a rule. Too many alcoholics in the family, and if you’re riding a motorcycle in Dallas (as I habitually do) you *really* don’t need to be drinking. Modern music of some kinds, yeah, I’m there listening to that. Also, watching the girls in their club attire. :D
I think that the issue there was just lack of data - you probably haven’t been downtown much since it *was* that bad whereas I’m there on a regular basis. If you don’t have any data indicating that things have changed, then you tend to extrapolate from the data you have. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t; and since the last data you had indicated the place was a hellhole I don’t blame you for not wanting to go down to confirm it. :P
In any case, if one is not into the younger scene, there really isn’t all that much to see in Downtown Dallas after dark. Some of the museums (which are quite good) have late night showings/hours and they are worth looking at, but that’s about it.
Lol. Thanx
Born in west by gawd va. I am ya’ll fluent

+1 for Fredericksburg, home of Admiral Nimitz & the WWII Pacific Museum. You won’t have time to see everything, so make sure you do the Combat Zone - it’s the guided tour portion & you’ll see a plane like Bush 41 flew, a PT boat like JFK’s, American & Japanese tanks & a field hospital.
We moved to Richardson in the mid 50s ..wanted to raise our children in a small town atmosphere..LOL..I think there were a thousand in my daughter's graduating class..
My son and I were recently trying to describe Del's hamburgers to my daughter in law..and were frustrated..Just smoky grilled wonderful is the best I can do.
We don't live there any more ..but I agree with your praise.
