Auto-tip is not a tip by definition
and I never go to places that expect tips

The Yahoo article is not as complete as that one. In it, it states that the auto-tip was based on a party of 20, and a party of 8 or more, the gratuity of 18% is automatically added in by the restaurant.

The “pastor” has a very small following thus far, only 15 in her church.
The total for the party was 200+. They demanded it be split into separate checks (to be then paid by the one credit card) thinking they would thus get around the autotip,
Ms Bell could have(and probably did) eaten $35 by herself.
Id like to see the whole receipt ...
she might have been counting babies and little children in that “8” also...
also they may have been using coupons...

When I was a bartender during college to pay for my tuition, some of our waiters would call in sick and I would do double-duty for a certain well-known bar-resto.
From my experience alone and I know I’m gonna get burned here, blacks are just damn cheapskates. Not in general, but in most cases, they just pay for the meal itself and they bitch almost about everything. I mean, we were paying the host or maitre’d just NOT to have them seat in our area but pass them to another waiter’s area.
That’s outrageous. If everyone did this there would be no waiters or waitresses. They only get like 3:0 0 dollars an hour because tips are to make the differences up to par. Wow! If you do not want to pay for waitress go to McDonald’s or like.
The waitress was being a snarky bully and that is failure face behavior in life. She was trying to harm the customer as she left her name visible for all the crazy internet service worker harassers she whipped into an anti-Christian a hate frenzy.
There is a fad right now among resentful waitresses to harm their customers they take their hate out on. This waitress would probably spit in the food of customers she hates serving if she would do this to a customer.
If I had a restaurant, I would be watching out for the sneaky bully server culture to make sure it did not invade my place of business. Who needs this attitude in their sociopathic behavior in their business?
When I was sixteen I started working in the Steak House at Knott’s Berry Farm. In my two weeks as a busboy I saw a lot. I spent the next three years as cook and one of the funniest things I ever saw was when after a waitress busted her hump on a party of twelve, the Cheap *ss left her a quarter. She chased him down outside and very loudly said “ Oh sir I think you forgot your Quarter!” Sometimes you just gotta call a cheap *ss out. Now you seem to think this waitress should have just shut up and took it, you seem to think a $34 and change tab is small potatoes, but did you bother to consider that these A holes probably kept that girl jumping so she could not wait on others? So not only did they cut her overall earnings they found a nasty and catty way to stiff her completely for the tip! I think this PAstor got exactly what she asked for.
“Auto-tip” has been a restaurant policy for decades. There is usually a citation on the menu. It wouldn’t be there if parties of 8 or more (typically) didn’t tend to flake out on the tip.
That said, it is wrong not to tell the customer you’ve added a tip, thereby getting “double sugar”. It’s been a long time since I waited tables, but the last few large parties I’ve been a part of were NOT told a gratuity had been added.
One time she told me: "I don't know why, but black customers always leave $2 tips, no matter what the bill is."
I don't think it's race, just culture in the US.
And yes, it's true about black customers complaining a lot, so they can get "free" meals. After they've eaten everything on the plate.
This scenario came up several times: A family would come into Sizzler, order one steak, and one salad bar on the side. Of course, then the whole family would help themselves to the salad bar with the one plate. When the manager confronted them they would always say the same thing: "It's because I'm black, isn't it?"
The manager would say: "Nope, we have plenty of white people that do that too!"
It’s pretty well-known in the bar/restaurant industry that blacks are bad tippers and often won’t tip at all if the server is white.
Servers mutter curses under their breath when they see a black family seated in their section knowing they are going to get little or nothing for their effort. This, in turn, causes servers who know what’s coming to provide poorer service which the blacks then perceive as racism when, in reality, their reputation is what brought out the bad service.
So it becomes a vicious circle - blacks tip poorly so they get treated poorly so they claim racism which only leads to more bad tips and more poor service. One place I frequented tried to remedy this by having black waitresses serve the black tables but the black waitresses got fed up with the crummy tips as well and quit.
So what does an establishment do? They can’t have a “no blacks” policy because that would bring out the Jesse Jacksons and they can’t lecture the blacks on the proper way to tip or get the r-word thrown back at them. It’s a no-win situation just as stores in bad neighborhoods often find out as well.

They should just incorporate it into the price and raise the pay of the wait staff. This tipping vs not tipping is stupid.
Pay your own dang waiter or don’t open a restaurant
And if 10% is good enough for G-D, it’s good enough for the gov’t!

In my experience, black people are often complainera and lousy tippers. One night, in the big dining room, we had a large party where they all had dinner plates and desserts. The cheapskates left 75 cents for two of us waitresses. For over 20 years I have done medical transcription for a living. At least I don't have to deal with lousy tippers! But some of the dictators are real slobs and make chewing, smacking, slurping, and shlomping noises while dictating. I curse them while working on their reports.
FYI, the waitress who posted this receipt and was subsequently fired was not the person that waited the table. A male co-worker of hers waited the table and showed her the receipt after the party had left. Also, the pastor, after catching flak from the online posting, apparently called up the Applebee’s demanding everyone involved in the transaction be fired, including the manager.
Why do you think it is the responsibility of the customer to pay the waitress/waiter staff's wages? The responsibility lies with the owner of the establishments and tipping should be at the discretion of the customer. If the wait staff want more money they should petition their bosses for higher wages or refuse to work at any restaurant that pays sub standard wages.
I very rarely tip. I hate tipping, I pay for a meal and expect the wages of the staff to be included in that price. If owners would increase their prices and pay their wait staff a decent wage we could do away with the outright thievery of tipping, just another way to steal your money.
I worked for a living since the age of about 15 and not one customer of the businesses I worked for(mainly lumber industry)ever paid me or any of my co-workers a tip. Tips are simply BS and people who tip and brag about it, and bad mouth non tippers, are idiots and self righteous prigs.
