NFL Tiebreaker Status (update for week 17, Vanity)
Dec 23, 2012 | campaignPete R-CT

Posted on 12/23/2012 5:43:55 PM PST by campaignPete R-CT

AFC

for a bye:
Hous has head-to-head over DEN, giving them Current hold on #1 seed and bye
NE PATS have head-to-head OVER HOUS and DEN
and BALT HAS head-to-head victory over PATS in fight for #3 seed.

BALT has clinched tiebreaker over CINN (div record)

TIEBREAKERS FOR INDY VS CINCY AT 10-6:
CONFERENCE WILL BE 7-5
IND VS. CIN, COMMON GAMES, INDY IS 4-1, CINCY IS 3-2
therefore, INDY HAS CLINCHED THE #5 SEED.

NFC
Giants: WASH AND DAL have tiebreaker over NYG (DIV REC),
NYG CAN only be wildcard.
NYG have tiebreakers vs MN and CHI and SEA (conf record)

DAL HAS TIEBREAKER VS. WASH
a tie DIV record ... DAL vs WASH common games: DAL uncommon is 0-2 (SEA CHI) WASH uncommon is 1-1 (STL MINN) therefore DAL has clinched common over WASH

MN has clinched DIV AND common games over CHI. Therefore has clinched tiebreaker over CHI.

NYG & WASH tiebreakers over the other 3 wildcarders {MN CHI SEA) in CONF record, here is NFC head-to-head VICTORIES:

........... NYG --- WASH CHI MN SEA

NYG ......X ............... X ... X ..... X ... X

WASH ... X .. ........ X .... X . WASH ... X

CHI .... X ...... ...... X .... X ... X ... SEA

MN .... X .. ......... WA .... X ... X ... SEA

SEA ..... X ........... X ... SEA ... SEA X

example: SEA beat CHI MN, did not play the other 2

Below is a 2-way wildcard tiebreaker grid for NFC. Y=Yes
so NYG has tibreakers over CHI MN SEA (due to c=conference record) The grid ABOVE is only head to head victories.

........... NYG ... WASH CHI MN SEA

NYG ......- ...... - ..... - ... Yc .. Yc .. Yc

WASH ... Yd .. ........ - . Yc.. Yhc . Yc

CHI .... - ......... ...... - .... - ... - ... -

MN .... - ................. - .... Ydg ... - ... -

SEA ..... - ,,...... .... - ..... Yh .. Yh ... -

example: MN has tiebreaker over CHI (d=div g=common games) (h=head-to-head victory)

WA & SEA are strong in tiebreakers. CHI is weak.

THE THREE-WAY WILDCARD TIEBREAKERS:
NYG-MINN-SEA ALL 9-7
WASH-MINN-SEA ALL 9-7
WASH (OR NYG) would get the first wildcard due to superior conference record. SEA gets 2nd wildcard due to head-to-head victory over MINN.

TOPICS: Sports
KEYWORDS: football; nfl; sports; tiebreaker; vanity; week16; week17
updates below as necessary. SEA could clinch at least wildcard #5 seed today vs SF.

The first observation is that NYG can only be the wildcard at 9-7, not division winner And DAL will be div winner at 9-7, cannot be the wildcard. CHI needs a 10th win and a 7th loss (or a tie) by either MN or SEA.

The NFC North has more victories than any other division. Another meaningless statistic.

Chicago will win next week. Minnesota will lose next week. Ergo, da Bears are in and the Vikes are out.

The only tie I'm interested in is between JAX and KC.

Who gets the title of "Worst team in the NFL"? Believe it or not, it DOES matter.

KC has the amazing 0-11 conference record, so they have the worst record. And the draft pick with a loss next week.

I didn’t mention that SEA has the tiebreaker (head-to-head victory) over Green Bay. So SEA could still get the #2 seed and a bye.

Oh, it ain't over yet! With a JAX loss and a win over Denver (hey, stop laughing, it could happen), the Chiefs could still crawl out of the sewer.

AFC
#5 INDY @ #4 BALT (OR PATS)
#6 CINN @ #3 PATS (OR BALT OR DEN OR HOUS)

NFC
#5 SEA (OR SF) @ #4 DALLAS OR WASHINGTON
#6 MINN (OR CHI OR WASH OR NYG) @ #3 SF (OR SEA OR GREEN BAY)

most would predict we are looking at SEA or WASH @ ATL in the Div round
and SF vs. GB, at a site yet to be determined.
And New England ultimately on the road vs HOUS or DENVER.

Indeed they can.

I’ll be rooting hard for the evil Pack to ensure that doesn’t happen and my Bears get in.

San Fran losing to Zona would be an epic fail, I can’t see it.

The AFC seeding is interesting, Houston gets the 1 seed with a win but if they lose they could end up without a bye if Den and NE both win, lol.

Houston plays the Colts in Indy ... should be close ... giving Colts the nod. Miami won't beat Patriots in Foxboro, unless under some play-off scenario it's advantageous for the Pat's to lose. Never know with Belichick.
Broncos take KC in Denver, a loss would be a major upset, but ya never know in the NFL ... Broncos by ten over KC.

Houston has never won at Indy not even last year when Indy sucked (Houston was down to their third string QB).

It would be amusing if they failed there yet again after being at the top of the AFC all year.

According to ESPN Houston is favored by 7.

I’m with you though I’m inclined to pick the Colts.

It’s of note that they are not playing for anything, they are locked into their seed. But I don’t see them resting everyone with it being Pagano’s first game back.
