Havard students get near-perfect SAT scores. These are smart, smart kids. So they shouldn't have trouble with a simple logic question, right?
Try the following puzzle:
A bat and ball cost $1.10.
The bat costs one dollar more than the ball.
How much does the ball cost?

It’s not right that some should have bats and balls when others cannot afford them nor should bats only be viewed as being paired with balls. It’s perfectly acceptable that you can have 2 balls without bats and it is also acceptable that you can have two bats without balls. This question is just a product of linear male thinking.
Bat and ball? Racist code words.
Formally,
Let X be the price of the bat and
Let Y be the price of the ball.
X+Y=1.10 -— Eq 1
X-Y=1.00 -— Eq 2
Solve the equation simultaenously:
2X=2.10 (Step 2)
X= 1.05 (step 3)
From Eq 2:
1.05-Y= 1.00 (Step 4) (substitute 1.05 for X )
Y= 1.05-1.00 = .05 (Step 5)
Therefore:
X (Price of bat) = 1.05
Y (Price of ball) = .05
(Of course, in an actual TIMED test, you have to act fast and don’t have the luxury of doing the above ).
RE: Damn, Im stoopid
No you’re not, you in fact, deserve to be a Harvard Student :)
I was engaged to a little cutie who lived in Texas. We had met and spent the Summer at a mountain retreat.
Just before classes began, I drove to Texas from Florida to visit her parents. Her Father was a genius who held a large number of patents, He was a chemist for Dow Chemical.
The first morning after I awoke but she was still asleep, Her Mother made me breakfast. Her Father was fiddling with a magazine which had a bunch of brain teasers in it. He asked if I liked doing them and I said truthfully that I did.
We worked several of them and I realized the whole thing was a test to see how smart his future Son-in-Law was.
Anyway one of the questions was this: You have 5 pieces of chain. Each piece has 3 links. You decide to make them into a single long chain.
You take them to a blacksmith and he says he will charge a penny to cut a link and 2 cents to weld a link back together. What is the cheapest you can have the job done.
The answer is 9 cents. I guess I passed as he said I was the only person who had ever given the correct answer.
x+y=1.10
x-y=1.00
-----------
2x = 2.10
x=1.05
y=.05
I haven't used that algebra in 50 years, but it gives the right answer, so I guess it's correct.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
You win.
:-)
Ok, that’s cool, but what happened to the little cutie? :)
If obama had balls, Reggie Love would still be his manlove and would be massaging his $ 1.05 bat.
This isn't a logic problem, it's a 5th grade basic arithmetic problem and one of the easier ones to do.
RE: I guess I passed as he said I was the only person who had ever given the correct answer.
So, are you married to the Texas cutie?
Here’s another logic test Harvard grads fail:
You are spending 40% more than your income. Should you
a. Increase Spending
b. Decrease Spending.
c. make your own dollar bills.
100% of Harvard grads say A AND C.
The Nobel Prize winning Princeton economist Professor who writes for the NY Times will object to the choices. He wants another choice:
d. Increase spending AND Make your own dollar bills
I just started at the ball = 0.0 and added the values of the bat at 1.00 more.
So I just quickly walked the values up like so
0.00 + 1.00 = 1.00
0.01 + 1.01 = 1.02
0.02 + 1.02 = 1.04
0.03 + 1.03 = 1.06
0.04 + 1.04 = 1.08
0.05 + 1.05 = 1.10 - bingo!
This is the fastest way to do it in your head, doing the algebra takes more time and the test may have a time limit.
Like with IQ test questions the answer than immediately comes to mind (0.10) is pretty much always false.
Enquiring minds need to know. Should I ask Michelle?
A smart politician should never be caught with a dead girl or a live boy, so I guess Barry be smart.
Don’t need algebra. Need a brain. The answer is the remainder of the difference between the 2 (.10)divided equally (.05).
No, we attended different colleges and after a few months she told me she thought she was in love with someone else. I was really devastated.
Anyway I ended up married to an even more beautiful girl. Oddly I kept in touch with a mutual friend who told me the Texas girl later broke up with the boyfriend. In the meantime I got married. After she found out that I was married, she went back to the boyfriend, they got married and from what I have heard, had a happy marriage. They also have 5 children.
Minimum blacksmith charge is $50.
The bat costs $1.05 and the ball costs 5¢. That was easy...
