Ken Burns trivializes the victimization of the wrongly accused men from the Duke lacrosse case According to documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, the Duke University lacrosse players were "three rich white boys who were mildly inconvenienced by rape charges that proved to be false. In no time the prosecutor of that case was fired, disbarred, and put in jail, and the three ended up getting a huge settlement." See here.
"Mildly inconvenienced"? Sigh. My first reaction was that I hadn't read it right. Then I read it again, and then again. Although I am sure he's seen it, I have sent Prof. KC Johnson a note about this, and hope that he responds on his blog Durham in Wonderland.
I confess I am thoroughly perplexed about why Burns felt the need to trivialize the inestimable toll that the false accusations took on the Duke boys just to underscore the severity of the harm to the victims in the Central Park Five case. I suppose he couldn't resist the urge to disabuse middle America of what he sees as its racial bias.

Ken Burns is, in fact, bisexual. After divorcing his first wife he was involved for several years with an African American man, and never really tried to hide it (though never made any public announcement about it either). Later he married his second wife.
Saying that someone is straight because they are married is ridiculous — look at Will Smith, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Mel Brooks, and a host of others.......Sometimes they are married to great women friends, sometimes to women paid to be with them, sometimes they even love the woman they are with on some level ...... but that doesn’t make them straight!

Virtually unknown about this case is this:
Most relatives of the unjustly accused who came to court were told numerous times that they would be KILLED.
Black people who attended the trial saw this as justice, and they would tell them to their faces, and not in whispers. They would sometimes also tell the victims their addresses in order to induce more fear.
The judge was aware of it and simply did NOTHING.
And the media would not report it.
Ken Burns, having done an admirable job on the War Between the States (yes, his title was the Civil War), then went on to other subjects, jazz, baseball.
Along the way he desperately wanted some male hormones and tried to be more “manly” it seems, with growing a scraggly pre-pubescent beard of sorts.
The person who made millions from NPR (our nickel) now needs to keep feeding the liberal PC intelligentsia with the proper indignation, regardless of facts.
KC Johnson’s incredibly documented and cross referenced blog points out that the lacrosse players were charged and indicted for over 11 months, not a “few weeks” and that Duke settled with the falsely accused, and they are still pursuing a case against the Durham city PD and the city itself— which is trying to wriggle off the hook in what can only be described as ridiculous means— including one of the Appeals Circuit judge who was a law partner with Doug Wilder (he the former gov. of VA) who sides with the said stripper, blackmailer and now...on trial for murdering her pimp. Nice place Durham— there is a school there I think.... they play basketball.
One can only imagine the “outrage” Burns would express against Zimmerman for “murdering” Trayvon Martin— this is HOW people think.
BTW, KC Johnson has a book titled “Until Proven Innocent” that is excellent, on the Duke lacrosse/ stripper case. There actually are people trying to get the prosecutor’s law license back— having lied about evidence to the judge in the case— amazing. It’s like OJ in reverse.
