People in the entertainment business sometimes make horrible career decisions. This is what is known as the "McLean Stevenson Effect." Named after actor McLean Stevenson who played the part of Henry Blake in the hit TV series "M*A*S*H." Stevenson was unhappy with being part of an ensemble so after about 3 seasons left the show to become the lead in the "McLean Stevenson Show" which promptly flopped. His career never recovered.
Another victim of the McLean Stevenson effect was Shelly Long who was in the hit series "Cheers." She left after 5 seasons to become a movie actress but pretty much flopped in that endeavor.
Finally there was Jeff Conaway who starred in my own favorite TV series "Taxi." After 3 seasons he left the show with a one-way ticket to obscurity.
Who else made poor showbiz career decisions to become victims of the "McLean Stevenson Effect."
I never liked Col. Potter as much as Blake.
Hello Larry was a pretty good show.
Once You’ve done Zardoz, there’s no shame in any role.
The result was that "Mary Anne" has earned millions of dollars over the years while fellow members of her cast, including Thurston Howell, got virtually squat.
Burt also turned down the James Bond role...said no American could pull it off- good call on that one.
I hadn't heard that, but I bet he would have been good in the part. I sure liked him in the first "Smokey & the Bandit" role.
And for that matter. M*A*S*H sure went downhill after Wayne Rogers left.
Of course look at all the success stories, Steve McQueen (The Bounty Hunter), James Garner (Maverick), Sally Field (The Flying Nun), Burt Reynolds (Riverboat and Gunsmoke0, Clint Eastwood (Rawhide), Pierce Brosnan (Remington Steele), Richard Boone (Have Gun Will Travel)
She (linda Hamilton) developed severe mental health issues if I’m not mistaken toward the end of the show & has had issues off & on since that time. She has a twin sister who is a nurse. They should have used her to fill in:)
That’s why they killed him off when he left the series. I read that they did this purposefully so he wouldn’t be able to have a change of heart and want back on the series.
What ever happened to Frank Burns on MASH? I know he has since died, but he went absolutely nowhere after he left MASH. I can’t even remember his real name. To me, he WAS Frank Burns and would never be anyone else.
Linda Hamilton works very regularly.
At least two TV series since Beauty, numerous TV series guest roles and movies, and an upcoming mini-series.
Nice career.

amanda tapping as samantha carter 10 years sg-1 5 years atlantis moved on to sanctuary that’s almost 20 years continuous work.
On CSI he’s naught but a poser! Take him out and there’d be no change to the story-line.
On “The Last of the Summer Wine”; the deal is that the actors have mostly just died off of that show. That’s how they leave. It went on for well over 30 years; they kept working well into their eighties for the most part.
Actually, Rob Morrow was very good in Numbers, and it was a successful show.
“They should have used her to fill in:)”
I thought the same thing. Totally agree. Meanwhile, Ron Perlman is doing fabulous.
He deserves it:)
Yup....Ron is a badass biker now.
