The terms of the competition are simple: Hunters in New Mexico have two days this weekend to shoot and kill as many coyotes as they can, and the winners get their choice of a free shotgun or a pair of semi-automatic rifles.
But the planned two-day coyote hunting contest has sparked an online petition that has generated tens of thousands of signatures worldwide. The FBI is investigating a death threat to the gun shop owner who is sponsoring the hunt. And one protester has even vowed to dress like a coyote to trick hunters into accidentally killing a human.

The hunt was pretty much a bust. The state closed their lands, and I think BLM did too, so it was all on private property. I heard about 25 coyotes were killed. There’s probably more than than living within a mile of me based on the racket they make.

There will always be an ample supply of coyotes. They’ll never be a threatened species.

Coyotes are a versatile and adaptive species who have long since become quite at home, not only in the country but in suburban and urban environments. Chicago, for example, has a sizable indigenous population. They have been under study by urban ecologists. They mostly avoid people, are seldom aggressive, and actually perfom a valued service by their efficient hunting and eating of rodents. A typical coyote in a city can eat as many as 3000 rats a year.
So hunt away, but they are here to stay.

That presumes that PETA persons are human.

That pretty much explained the mental capacity of the protesters, didn’t it.

Now if some enterprising person could train them to eat gang-bangers, I might be persuaded to stop shooting them.

Yes, I can attest to this for a fact. I’ve lived here all my life, and I’ve never actually seen a live one, since they are very careful to stay out of sight of humans, but you can hear them in the forest preserves, or up on the freight train tracks at night. A few years back we did get a bold one who tried to nab a small dog in a mall parking lot, right off the owner’s leash.

How about hunting gangbangers?
I am as Pro-2A as they come but despise hunts like this.
