The NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD in Portsmouth, Virginia, is one of the largest shipyards in the world specializing in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines. It's the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy, and it's also the most multifaceted.

Virginia is CRAWLING with Navy personnel...especially Norfolk (The Norfolk Navy Shipyard alone employs 11,000) Norfolk/Portsmouth and Northern Va are the keys for Romney to win the state.
YES!
But not VA. It was aimed at the $20 billion or so being spent to build Freedom class LCSes in WISCONSIN.
Romney already has VA... while this cements it, it really helps out George Allen, who has been blasting Kaine on the likely loss of shipbuilding jobs in Norfolk in his TV ads.
Looks to me to be a double-whammy.
I’m getting kind of impatient for the Romney exploit of this. Seems like a no brainer - send hometown boy Paul Ryan back to the state to accuse Obama of threatening the program.
BO constantly says the military is not asking for these things and no one talks about the fact that the JCS is appointed by BO and is being told not to ask for more ships, missiles systems etc. So his entire argument is without merit or a basis.
Plus he gave Mitt more ammo - the original statement included info that Navy leadership was saying the Navy had 30+ less ships than it needed to do its job and that number would likely move to a 130+ ship deficit with sequestration. I haven't seen anyone making that connection yet, but it makes Zero's response even less "intuitive".
Obama’s arrogance is impressive. Unlike in typical presidential elections, he has been clear that he intends to utterly ruin several states economies by destroying their industries, and yet he still boldly pretends that they will vote for him.
Seriously, how many states has he done this to? It is like giving them an ultimatum: surrender and be killed or just die. I don’t care which.
If you’re right then wouldn’t that indicate that Romney views the defense budget as a porkbarrel to use to win elections? Let’s promise more ships, not because we neeed them but because they’re built in swing states? Not what I’d hoped for.
I’d see it as a win-win. The USN is suffering from a lack of ships. This is only going to get worse. Major shipbuilding, repair and naval facilities exist in swing states. Romney gets to point out where his national defense policies align with local economic concerns while Obama’s don’t.
“If youre right then wouldnt that indicate that Romney views the defense budget as a porkbarrel to use to win elections? Lets promise more ships, not because we neeed them but because theyre built in swing states? Not what Id hoped for.”
I don’t know what planet you’ve been on for the past four years, but Obama has been gutting our military programs, both present and future. Take bombers. Our B-52’s were built in the ‘50’s. They are our “mainstay” in air power. The B-1’s and B-2’s are not in sufficient numbers to carry out a significant mission. So where is the replacement for the B-52? As for ships, Romney is correct, our Navy is becoming anemic. I don’t think that Romney, unlike FUBO, views the military budget as a pork barrel.
The notion that the Joint Chiefs are doing what’s best for the country is laughable. We have some “flag officers” who fancy themselves politicians so that they get to stay on and retire.
And you base that on what?
Last night was a psychological debate. Obvious answers would end up losers...the real answer was actually the unspoken second response that we’re figuring out today. Obama played mainly at the first level and therefor fell for the traps.
Romney knew not to fall for any Obama traps and kept his answers general and bland. It probably earned him the presidency.
Please correct this old Marine if he’s been wrong in his assumption:
Submarine = Boat = Ship
So in a 313 “ship” Navy, it seems to me that subs are included in that number...
Wait, are those sub things the boats that go under water?
This is a great move on Mitts part! He picks up Va and Wisconsin in one swoop. Lol barry let his hate for the military slip out
I am still trying to figure out how to use a “bayon” net.
It should have opened their eyes that Obama sees their ships as no more significant than horses and bayonets.
