This week the US, UK, France, and a few Middle Eastern countries are conducting naval exercises in the Gulf of Persia to practice clearing mines that Iran, or other groups may place around the Straits of Hormuz in an attempt to disrupt the movement of oil tankers in the region.
Mohammed Ali Jafari, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that the “exercise is a defensive exercise and we don't perceive any threats from it. We are not conducting exercises in response.”
Yet this is not the impression that is given.
Just yesterday, according to the official IRNA news agency, upon the direct orders of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Iran launched a refitted Tareq-901 submarine and a Sahand destroyer into the Gulf from the port of Bandar Abbas.

I didn’t serve in the Navy but I am sure those guys find it amusing.
long, long ago in another galaxy the Soviet Navy would follow us around, even to the point of coming up along aside of us and waving and yelling ‘Hello Yanks’ ...weird ..
yeah... they would get so close that we would flip them the bird.... and they would flip it right back at us...
they had trawlers following us picking up the garbage we threw overboard to look for information...
every once in a while, we would load up a bag with human feces and toss it over....
I say blow them out of the water and ship the pieces back to Iran.
Uh...maybe send them a video as the pieces will be at the bottom of the gulf.
Neah. Keep an eye on ‘em in case they have trouble, or want to defect.

As I read your second sentence, I just knew what the third sentence would be ...
I can imagine the glee when the Iranian sub surfaces to find itself liberally plastered with waterproof bumper stickers like:
“My Other Submarine Has A Limpet Mine”
“Who’s Your Daddy?”
“Good For One Free Grog at Davy Jones’ Locker”
“My other sub is an artificial reef.”

i believe the wrter means deployed, sortied, or sailed but not launched.
