Strange door-to-door election request - anyone else heard of this? (vanity)

Posted on 10/13/2012 6:15:17 PM PDT by AUJenn

This morning, we had a nice gentleman from the Florida GOP come by our home to greet us and ask if we had any questions about voting (we have a Romney sign in our yard and are registered Republicans). He was visiting all GOPers in the neighborhood and making sure everyone was familiar with voting precincts and offering absentee ballots. I was very impressed with his well-dressed appearance and kind manners. We saw nothing like this in 2008 and were very happy to see it.

Later this afternoon...a young man, probably around 20, came to the door and said he was working for an 'election study.' He asked if he could take our photograph next to our Romney yard sign to be 'published in a book.' My husband thought it was a strange request and said no thanks and closed the door. We thought this was very bizarre. Has anyone else encountered someone asking to do this?

The house next to us is vacant, neighbor died over three years ago and heirs paid the mortgage until recently. Now trying to decide whether to sell or let it go back to the bank. A couple of weeks ago right at dusk two hispanic guys drive up and one jumps the padlocked gate. One neighbor called the Sheriffs Dept and hubby went down to check them out. Their story was they were from the bank, there to take pictures.

About that time the Sheriffs Dept showed up, talked to them for awhile and then waited until they left before leaving. We never did find out what they found out or why they let them leave/insisted that they leave. Anyway, neighbors believe it’s a scam that most people would believe.

No, not from the bank by the way. Mortgage is current right now, no foreclosure as yet.

I’ve knocked on thousands of doors for GOP candidates over the years and I’ve NEVER heard anything remotely like that. Sounds like they may have tried to target you for something unsavory.

Could be as simple as strangers casing your house for burglary later. Or even an armed home invasion robbery. What better excuse for robbers to check if anyone is home and how old they are. They already know if you are a repub, you may have some valuables in house.

I spent 6 hours today working for R and R in Ft Lauderdale FL. Your first visit sounds like what we were doing. Your second visit is from creepy town and id nothing that was sanctioned by the campaign.

That is exactly what I told my husband. Hmm... take our picture, in front of our house...no thanks. Total stranger, no ID, no real information about what he was doing. That is why my husband quickly said ‘no thanks’ and shut the door. But we saw him ‘taking a picture’ of an older lady down the street next to her Obama sign. Weird.

I feel confident the first man was legit. He was professional, polite, didn’t ask any odd questions. Just said he was from the GOP and wanted to count on our vote and make sure we were going to be able to vote. We have a lot of older folks in the neighborhood who are perhaps unable to get to polling places, so maybe that’s what they were targeting. We are in our 30s with young kids so I am sure he was not expecting that.

The second young guy was just very strange.

What is ODD....is that someone comes to the door of someone WITH A ROMNEY sign IN THEIR YARD...and asks THEM if THEY are going to vote....That, to me, is weird. People with signs in their yards are the most motivated.

Hello! I live near a Mormon Temple. The first guy fits their bill 100%, the second guy, not so much.

In the states where most people now vote early/absentee, both parties are now canvassing all their registered voters to try to get them to vote early. Both parties spent the summer canvassing the Independents to try to determine if they lean R or D.

The Dems have early voting down to a science and it has made the difference for them in many elections.

They were probably going to check to see if there was any copper tubing that they could rip off, or find anything else they could cart away. I’m surprised the sheriff let them go. Hopefully he made them show ID and made note of their names for future reference, plus also checked to see if there were any outstanding warrants on them. They were there to commit a crime, nothing more.

I would not trust someone offering absentee ballots door to door. More likely trying to disenfranchise you by having you fill out the ballot and then dump it, not mail it in, preventing a vote against Obama.
The door to door election study is likely a scam. I’ve received phone surveys several times for my view on the election. I’ve been in focus groups by colleges for political opinions. In all cases, such as stopped in the mall, started with “I’m XYZ, with such and such university, and we are doing a political survey of likely voters, would you like to participate.” No one has come to my door, and it certainly wouldn’t be an “election study” without a clear and up front statement of the credentials. I deliberately join these surveys to ensure that Republicans are represented and even took follow up surveys specifically for Republicans. All surveys started with the person’s name, here’s my supervising professor, I go to this school.
I think you’re getting targeted because of the Romney sign.

I did door-to-door today, too. I already had the names and addresses of registered voters. People were very willing to tell me who they planned to vote for, which surprised me.

However, I don’t think I would be willing to tell anyone who I voted for if they already had my name and address. Who knows what the leftists will do with this info if Obama is “reelected”?

I had a young woman come to my door regarding absentee ballots. I told her I didn’t like them & thought people should go to the polls to vote. She left.

To use the photo with minimal legal liability, he should have had people signing permission forms before taking the photos.

That’s what we believe. Our Sheriff’s Dept is not into any extra work unless absolutely necessary.

Hopefully, they won’t try this block again. Hubby met them with a riot shotgun.

I wouldn’t open the door to strangers — you never know whether it’s real, voter fraud, or a robbery attempt using election as an excuse to get into your house.

I would make sure to vote, but wouldn’t even open the door to talk to anyone.
