Does any one have any experience or insight into fighting Walmart expansion that they would be willing to share?
***They found an Indian graveyard at the proposed Wal-mart site here.***
Ah ha! The old “sacred Indian Burial Ground” excuse!
If I were you, I'd get with the folks at Bella Vista, AR and learn their tactics to resist the growth of Walmart into their area.
My local Wal-Mart just added groceries and expanded its beverage section. It now sells my beer at $1.77 (per 25oz can), as opposed to my local liquor store, that sells it at $2.29. I’m supposed to be loyal to the liquor store why?
***Bella Vista, AR, that has no Walmart does not want a Walmart, and has successfully refused any attempts to have a Walmart. ***
Bella Vista does not need a Walmart. If they want something they can go SOUTH a couple of miles and there is the big one behind the Peale Mansion or they can go NORTH to the big one near Jane Missouri. Bella Vista is well covered under the Walmart umbrella.
He’s referring to this one:
They won’t have an answer other than “BIG CORPORATIONS” and “CHINNNNNAAAAAAAAA.”
That being said, do pay attention to some of the prices - I’ve found that Walmart is not competitive in some areas. I can get a lot of alcohol much cheaper at Walgreens than Walmart, and much more conveniently as well (as I’m sure Walgreens uses it as a loss leader to get people into their outrageously priced, but incredibly convenient stores).
But by and large, Walmart bests the competition on price.
If you want to see an army of shoppers sliding their welfare cards through the reader at a check out line go to any Walmart on the first day of the month.
If it happens to fall on a Friday, the evening shopper crowd will be overwhelming.
Are you kidding.... This is a Walmart neighborhood store @ 42,000 sq ft....
Your avg reg grocery store....dollars to donuts if this was. publix grocery store going up...all you hear are crickets....
I could understand their concens if it was a super WM @ 100,000 sq ft plus which do cause traffic issues...
What a bunch of whiners ...
There goes the property values and your quality of life. What a shame.
The nursery is going to be replaced by another business so maybe it could be worse.
You have to work on keeping the traffic for the store geared outside the neighborhood. You can also work to have them put up fencing and landscape to block the view of the store and parking lot from your neighborhood.
Great point, too bad you’re post #129!
And according to the article (which I just read), it also includes a Wawa. Anyone on the northeast coast would suggest that the original poster would be EXTREMELY LUCKY to have a Wawa going in nearby!
I watched the video first than read the article....the people in the video say it’s a super store.... They either are lying or the article is wrong because a 42,ooo sq ft grocery store actually rather small...and definitely not a super WM
....and yes you are 100 % correct about the wawa...
It will generate more traffic than the WM neighborhood store will...
Go to any store - not just walmart - on the first of the month, you will see the same thing.
You miss the point. Walmart has tried to enter Bella Vista on more than one occasion and Bella Vista has successfully pushed back.
Sigh. Mindless residents.
Get a different hobby, then.
Lionel and MTH trains are still made here. In fact, rocker Neil Young is a major player in Lionel.
They get tax abatements because they employ a large number of new workers, both in the construction and in the operation of their superstores.
That tax revenue from those who work there offset any lost revenue from the abatement and is used as an incentive, Usually where a Wally’s opens, a Lowe’s or Home Depot follows...more jobs. MORE JOBS than the mom and pop stores ever provide, and at better benefits, too. As for the unionized groceries? They’re expensive, and when people go to Wal-Mart instead it puts another union=dominated business on notice that to survive they’ll have to somehow bust the union.
The reasons people oppose Wal-Mart are many and varied, and all bad reasons. The most odious are the NIMBY knockers who want their bucolic little areas to remain so. Well, you cannot stop progress or halt development. If you don’t like it, move somewhere else.
If you know history you’d know the 16th Amendment was never properly ratified by the senate.
There were a lot of shenanigans with Massachusetts that no one ever brings up.
The business of America is business.
Period.
Local control ended April 9, 1865.
I’m a capitalist first and foremost. Quaint ideas such as yours will never be allowed to stop progress or making money.
As if Walmart is the only store that sells Chinese goods.
