My 25 year son was making a nice living playing online poker from the home in Florida that he owns. Then on April 15, 2011, Eric Holder shut the online poker activity within the U.S. Many in my sons's field are traveling to Rosario, Mexico (20 minutes south of Tijuana), opening bank accounts in Mexico and paying inexpensive rate to live there and play online for weeks at a time. All to get past the Holder U.S. blockage.
The rates are so low there right now because the tourism is virtually dried up from high crime and bad press. I pointed out to him the if occupancies are at 10% then the ratio of criminals to visitor will be 10 times what it used to be. I also point out that drugs and money is the target of the criminal element and that poker players can be a target just cause of the monies aspect.
I wonder how many Americans are now at risk cause of this Obama/Holder shutdown in the U.S.
Any other arguments or stories that Freepers can share here would be appreciated.
I know...at GA meetings..
Let me get this straight. You want advice on keeping your professional gambler son in the US? He’s a gambler/risk taker... let him risk is head for cheap beer and a royal flush.
He's right. In fact, the Republicans did prohibit US players from playing online poker, in 2006. What happened on April 15, 2011 was that the three largest sites that still accepted US players were indicted for money laundering and fraud for taking various actions in order to evade the 2006 law.
The shutdown of online poker in this country is a great example of both parties working together to restrict our freedoms. All it took was (more than) a few million dollars from Las Vegas lobbyists.
Tell him that homosexual mexican youts(sic) are waiting in eager anticipation for and TARGETING poker players to set up shop and hand him a jar of vasoline.
Poster said it’s Rosario, 20 minutes south of Tijuana...but according to Google maps that would be Rosarito, not Rosario.
“He’s right. In fact, the Republicans did prohibit US players from playing online poker, in 2006.”
Are you mistaken ???
Who controlled the house and senate in 2006 ??
It's illegal and he'll get killed or arrested but at least you'll be able to identify the body or visit him in prison.
Tell him to get a real job.
Yes, It’s Rosarito. Sorry.
I’d tell him to locate farther south of the border, more towards Mexico City, some place like Queretaro or Morelia or Xalapa. They’re safe, clean, beautiful colonial cities. Highly recommended.
At 25 he’s a fully grown man....He’s more competent to make decisions in his own life than you are.....
If he doesn’t take your advice then shut up and support him....
I suspect he prefers Mexico over Vegas in the mistaken belief he can avoid the IRS.
He can dodge them for a few years, but unless he denounces his USA citizenship, he still owes US income taxes he earns anywhere in the world. It sucks, but is the law.
Tell him to hit the casinos in Mississippi, a lot closer to home, and most there speak english.
Except for that whole bit about Honduras having the world's highest murder rate, 4x that of Mexico.

I feel you pain. Personally. I have a son in the exact same circumstance. Only Mexico isn’t on his list. I agree with the other poster who mentioned Costa Rica. There is apparently a whole community of American online poker players there. In fact, I read they are welcomed.
For those mentioning Canada, I have heard nothing but horror stories about trying to get in there. They actually have laws and crap that they ENFORCE, unlike us! I don’t think you just go to the border and announce you want to come in. Please expand on how you got in??
Get another job? Yeah. Tried that lately? Even “beginner” jobs in many fields are paying minimum wage (with college degrees!) and those are extremely difficult to get! It’s a miracle to even get an interview.
If you can’t convince him not to go make sure that he studies the culture and what to avoid and what areas to avoid.
Part of the problem is that what is left of the police are fighting the drug cartels and the other criminals are getting away with anything.
You say he’s in Florida and I don’t know anything about this but is there any way he can get some kind of satellite connection from the Bahamas or somewhere out there so his internet doesn’t originate in the US?
¿Habla Español ?
The town, I believe, is Rosarito.
Sometimes people have to learn things the hard way.
Pray for his safety.
Never shelter anyone from the realities of their decisions.
Sounds like you support the idea that his addiction is 'his field".
