My son’s take is that the Republicans were going to shutdown the online playing anyway.

He's right. In fact, the Republicans did prohibit US players from playing online poker, in 2006. What happened on April 15, 2011 was that the three largest sites that still accepted US players were indicted for money laundering and fraud for taking various actions in order to evade the 2006 law.

The shutdown of online poker in this country is a great example of both parties working together to restrict our freedoms. All it took was (more than) a few million dollars from Las Vegas lobbyists.

Slightly incorrect. There is no Federal law banning Americans from playing online poker. What Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (or UIGEA) did was make it illegal for banks and other financial institutions to tranfer money to and from online gambling sites. Actually the case against 2 of the 3 sites has pretty much fallen apart. Full Tilt is still in trouble, but for stealing their customers’ money from their supposedly segregated accounts. Much like John Corzine and MF Global.
