I was at Dick's this morning to buy some 223 ammo and was paying in cash. Before the checkout clerk would ring me out I had to tap Yes or No on the pad for the question of "Are you a US citizen"? None of the other gun stores I frequent ask this question......will be my last ever Dick's Sporting Goods purchase.
A private entity can set its own limits for sale of ammunition that go further than the law. Dick’s is not violating the law by asking citizenship status, unless you convolute what the law says as a limit on whether the business can ask for citizenship status.
What? The second amendment has NOTHING to do with how a private company deals with its sales.
The Bill of Rights was written to control government, period.
Yeh, see, people are pointedly ignoring that. Some of the comments here on a few topics recently have sounded like they were written by Coast to Coast fans.
Thank you very much for the info, Gator.
“It does appear that the law restricts private sales to individuals who are ILLEGAL ALIENS.”
Understood and agree. However, I am still a bit confused. Is this law federal?
My point is that if I had a yard sale and wanted to sell an old single-shot .22 or box of ammo to one of my ‘customers’ would I have to demand they prove to me that they are a U.S. citizen? How? Birth Certificate, drivers license, etc.?
Here in NYS you can run an ad for a gun for sale, you get a phone call..the guy comes over and leaves with his new gun after paying in cash. Done deal. This transaction DOES NOT apply to pistols where a permit is required.
Again, I’m not wanting to jump into the ongoing argument in any way. I posted to you because of your FFL.
Thanks again....panax
Well, yeah, I guess that's the way it is if you don't have an American friend who can walk into the store with you and handle the transaction.
That's fine; I don't care. Just as long as they don't point to the Constitituion and claim they are entitled to buy ammo the way some illegals point to the Constitution and claim they are entitled to "free" government schooling, health care, welfare, food stamps, etc.
I had a green card until 91, I’m pretty sure I would have been allowed to be ammo. Are you a US citizen does not answer the question... Are you here illegally.
I had considered it and put out a bait, but she wasn’t biting LOL
On what? Were you prevented from purchasing?
And for what it's worth, I bought 4 boxes of light target loads a couple weeks ago at my local Dicks and no such question was asked of me.......Therefore, I'm hesitant to accept the credibility of your post.
You may want to search before you post....
Why I won’t buy ammo at Dick’s anymore

You were a Legal Alien, vs. an illegal alien. Read the regs that I posted and it should be clear.
You’re wrong. I posted the regs and you continue to ignore them.
If you doubt someone’s legal residence here, then just satisfy yourself with ID, and other proofs. If there is any doubt I just won’t sell.
I don't have to google search anything. As I said, I didn't have to state anything when I bought my shells.
Judging how fast you were able to post that link, I suspect you're merely echoing some dude on your favorite website who has an axe to grind against Dicks...........
As a side note, what do you care, you paid cash..........Unless maybe your name is George Washington......LOL!
why is it any of their business?
ask them if they want to sell you something or not?
Re: “That is an INFRINGEMENT.”
How is it possibly an “infringement” to ask you about your citizenship?? Me thinks you protest too much, so are you a citizen, actually?? Speak up, please!
