In case you needed more reason not to eat the worst candy in existence, a recent batch of black Red Vines licorice from Union City, Calif. has just been found to contain dangerous amounts of lead.
According to a recall issued yesterday, all one-pound bags of black Red Vines labeled Best Before 020413″ should not be eaten and can be returned to their place of purchase for a full refund, after health officials found the batch to contain up to 13.2 micrograms of lead, or more than twice the state-recommended safe amount.
Lead-filled licorice = blackjack.
as a kid, licorice was one of those staples that passed around when kids got together....along with ‘dots’ on paper and wax ‘soda’ bottles filled with goop.
I was never, ever a liker of the foul sticks...either black or red. in my book, candy had chocolate in it....all else was sham-candy, that you ate, only to be polite to whomever was giving it to you.
I moved to Sweden for four years and was appalled by how many people there loved black licorice to the extent that the flavor was used in bubble gum and...ack...ice cream. Barf.
Best to stick with unleaded...
I love black licorice... the unleaded kind.
2) "Red Vines" is the absolute worst brand, regardless of color or flavor. It should all be rounded up and rocketed into the Sun; the factory should be subjected to saturation nuclear bombing, and the formula destroyed forever.
The first part of that is meaningless if not referenced to some unit weight. 13.2 micrograms per gram? per pound? per ton? the whole of that batch?
And the second part is nonsensical as well. If 6.6 micrograms are considered "safe," what happens to people who eat twice as much as others?
Black licorice is yummy, as are black jelly beans. Anisette is good and Sambuca makes a great shot! Maybe it’s an acquired taste?
“Anisette is good...”
Let me guess... you are from Italian descent? All my friends that are Italian LOVE Anisette. At Christmas, they even make Anisetta (sp?) cookies. Am I right?!
Do you realize that black licorice is in Italian sausage and spicy Thai food?
two words:
double salt
real black licorice is very good. I purchased a lb of salted black licorice a few months ago and every once in a while, I grab a piece and hide the rest from the kids. It’s a nice treat on par with really good chocolate.
The red crap and the mass produced junk gives the authentic stuff a bad name.
if you refering to the seed of the Finocchio....(or fennel seed)...
first off I usually order my sausage from the pork store without fennel. but even when I do not...the small amount of fennel does not impart enough flavor to make a difference...
Thai food? ate it a time or 2 (sounds like bubba)and just as soon not try it again.
Mmmmmmm! I haven’t thought about that in ages. Thanks! .........off to dust off the Sambuca bottle ........
Black licorice seems to be one of the few things people either LOVE or HATE. I’m in the love-it category. I’ll probably have to pick up some Snaps today, because of this!
yup, it’s an acquired taste. The time I tried to drink ouzo, I couldn’t get past the smell to drink it...
