They overlooked the obvious, THE HUMAN RACE! We are the king of the hill when it comes to killing. We're so good at it that the only reason the race survived this long is women are fertile twelve times a year.

You may want to rethink that with groundhogs. They can do a lot of damage to your property.
Groundhogs undermined the floor of your barn one year and our harvester fell through the floor. It took two tractors and a lot of work to get that harvester out of the hole.
The groundhogs have 5-1/2 acres of forest on the property to burrow into as they please. Our house and garage are deep-rooted in the ground and made of brick. All egress from the outside has been stopped off for anything larger than an ant.
The mouse infestation that the place had when we bought it has been eliminated by our cats and by the little mousy entryways’ being blocked.
I’m distressed to hear about your barn and your harvester!! I hope that the harvester did not sustain any irreparable damage and that your barn is all right again.
We only have a Cub Cadet for snow throwing in the winter and mowing in the summer. It stays in the garage. Our property is otherwise just a 1/2 acre lawn and low-maintenance plants, and the lawn is surrounded by trees.

How deep?
It is not unusual for a groundhog to tunnel down ten feet or more.
Does your garage have a basement under it? If it doesn’t (most garages are built on a slab with a base less than three feet in the ground) a groundhog will find it a prime place to build a home.
If you want to discourage such a home maker you can bury chicken wire (stainless steel for long term) about three to five inches under ground horizontally next to your foundation. The groundhog will begin digging hit the chicken wire and not be able to dig through it and move on.

The garage and house have a 2000 sq. ft. basement. The “exterior” walls of the basement are made of cinder block. They are faced with brick in the “walk-out” portion.
There are no groundhog holes anywhere near the house (we check). But I like your chicken wire idea for the ground in front of the walk-out part.
At the place we rented before we bought this one, we had a groundhog living under the garage. There wasn’t much dirt outside his hole, so we thought nothing of it - ignorant former tract-home dwellers from California.
I’m positive that if the landlord saw the hole to its burrow after we moved out, that groundhog is deceased and the hole is full of concrete. He had no problem killing vermin, and he isn’t nearly so ignorant as we were.
Oh gee! I enjoy watching “Summer Wine”. Comes on late here - 10:30 PM; most nights we fall asleep while watching it. - I think the actors have just had to die off that show instead of being fired; think Compo was in real life a little less scruffy than he was on the show. (Nora Batty passed away not all that long ago; Cleggy’s in his 90’s now.)
My longtime roommate and best friend, Cat (yes, I named her Cat)had to be put to sleep today.
Apparently she found a cache of thread and she could not regurgitate it. I was successful in extracting about 15” but it broke off and the next time she was trying to oust it I caught her and was able to get another 15 or inches but it broke off and I was unable to reach any more. The Vet (kind of) led me to believe that the string probably wrapped around her intestine and I probably worsened the situation - although he kindly didn’t ‘blame’ me.
I finally took her in today and luckily I got the ‘old guy’ Vet - still a kid but at least I didn’t have to tell a young bright eyed girl to ‘do the deed’.
Will have to replace her soon, so as I can maintain my sanity but will be haunted by the fact that I know she is in this room, right now and every noise I hear is taken for Cat jumping on my desk or worse...
I certainly hope that I gave her as much as she gave me.

Oh I’m so sorry! I so often tell my kitty that she is my “best friend in the world,” and indeed she is. What a wonderful comfort and blessing they are but the pain is so wrenching when we ultimately outlive them.
I lost one nine years ago, she would curl up in my arms every night and purr me to sleep. I still miss her. But when I do I stop and ask the Lord to give her a kiss for me.
I am firmly convinced that our beloved pets go immediately to heaven, and do in fact await our arrival. Sincerely praying that God will comfort you as only He can.
Awwww, sorry for your loss. That sucks big time. =(.
I lost my eldest Kitty (yes I named her Kitty) 12/16/10. I still look for her in her usual spots.

roommate, best friend, and kitty, Cat. My Rocket the Cat
died early Saturday morning here at home, of chronic renal
failure and congestive heart failure. He was a good boy.
I can truthfully say that your pain is my pain.
Years ago my cat was messing w the german shepherd, hissing, the shepherd was resting on the kitchen floor, lifted its paw and “bam!” down on the floor. That dismissed the cat.

Sorry to hear about Cat. I had to put my best friend Timmy down 7 years ago this month. I still miss him, but thank the Lord that he let me have the joy of his companionship for 10 years.
I’m sorry, losing a pet sucks so bad. It’s especially hard when it’s sudden like this.

TOL, I’m so sorry to hear about Rocket. I read that he was sick, but I didn’t know you lost him. Such heartbreak on this thread.
