The latest Woody Allen movie is so much not what you would expect from Woody Allen, I have to post this little commentary. I don't know if he suddenly had an epiphany or something, but I was totally blown away. Heavy spoilers follow...
Ok, early on he starts criticizing his daughter's new Italian boyfriend whom he refers to as a Communist because he is a pro-bono lawyer, union supporter, etc. Woody's movie-wife says that he used to be like that. He says, "Yeah, when I was younger, but I was never a Communist. I don't even like to share a bathroom."
Anyway, as the story progresses, Woody makes more and more comments related to "What's wrong with success?" Meanwhile, the left-leaning boyfriend is progressively shown in a negative light while Woody's pro-Capitalism stance is continually championed.
By the end, the left-leaning boyfriend has to admit that he was wrong and apologizes. It was unbelievable! It was the first time ever, that I've seen a comedy in which the right-leaning character is not a straw-man and mocked throughout the story, but instead, it is the self-righteous liberal character who is portrayed that way.
So, I'm just saying...This is a really, really, really funny Woody Allen movie. OMG. I was laughing so much. It pokes a lot of fun at liberalism and liberal society and supports a more right-leaning perspective. Totally not what you would expect from Woody Allen. so I'm just sayin'...
He must be sleeping with an 18 year old Republican.
Great line! I think I will steal borrow it.
His movies in the 1960s and 70s were goofy fun but marrying his step-daughter kind of ruined the Woodman for me. But thanks for the review, I would never have guessed.
Maybe it is true, then—the Ancient saying-—Wisdom only comes with Age.
As Communists always note——so everyone stays ignorant and hates their parents and has no respect for them-—Never listen to anyone over 30.
Conditioning to think old people are fools, is the opposite of what both Socrates and Confucius stated. Experience will produce Wisdom-—if one is willing to open their mind up to Knowledge and study. Growing in knowledge is a daily thing.
BTW, the genius of our Founding Fathers was extraordinary because of their young age——I read that somewhere. Their thinking was profound considering their young ages—Madison particularly. He was requesting the latest books of importance from Jefferson who was in Europe at the time-—anything new on political thought or philosophy. But back then, people didn’t have TV and Bread and Circuses like they do now (agitprop) to take them away from acquiring knowledge.
Note: The very LATE date of entering a “school”. Independent thinkers do NOT go to an indoctrination center before the Age of Reason-—that was Dewey’s influence (Fabian Socialist) who wanted to shape the “plastic minds” of the masses and get them before their Christian Foundation was laid and away from the influence of loving parents-—so they are emotional cripples and self-conscious about everything.
Look at Abe Lincoln-—how easily he was swayed by “group think”-—HA! No school than a few weeks when he was around 8.
“Group think” is the result of the Prussian system of education the Socialists designed for Germany which was dragged to American Schools (and Russian)-—along with Marxist curricula (moral relativism) by Dewey.
If it was an epiphany that Woody had-—it is a true belief in God. That is all which will make him Wise.
I detest Woody Allen movies. Last one I watched some of was Midnight in Paris not knowing who the director was. Once I saw one of the long drawn out scenes with cheesy music off it went.

I just visited Rotten Tomatoes. Not one review, and I read about ten, mentioned this aspect of the movie. The flick seems to have generated more negative than positive comments.
I LOVED Woody Allen’s early movies. I HATED his later movies. I am disgusted by his relationship with his stepchild/wife.
Having said that and being dragged to see his last movie, I split a gut laughing.Absolutely hilarious! This is the Woody Allen of old.
“I would have to receive a direct order from G-d to see a woody allen movie...”
Point taken. But if you are ever in the mood for a really funny and entertaining movie and not have to worry about having your political sensibilities insulted, keep this in mind.
Most artists are failures as human beings, unfortunately.
Glad to hear about the new Woody Allen movie ... the last few have not been that good.
The Once?
I’m stealing that.
I remember Eric Hoffer saying that given the very high mortality rate, poor nutrition, poor medical care, etc. ... people in ancient times (right up to the 19th century, when medicine improved) had a very short life expectancy. Forty years old was extreme old age. He said ‘history was made by juvenile delinquents’.
The gratuitous Tea Party smears in ‘Midnight in Paris’ were a huge turn-off for me. I’m wondering if some adult didn’t get to him over that and turn his head around, or if he thinks conservatives have short memories...
GO FOR IT..
Someone must have told him - you can gross more than $10-$15 million in sales if you write for an audience outside of Manhattan dwellers.
Why do so many brilliant people throw everything away?
That is the question I have been asking my whole life. It is what makes me cry when I watch “A River Runs Through It.”
I rather enjoyed Crimes and Misdemeanors mostly because of Martin landau.
One, Two, Three was a hilarious movie, with Jimmy Cagney doing a fine turn in a comic role set in Cold War Berlin.
More likely he’s sick of his current aging liberal wife and has the hots for some conservative-leaning, younger beauty. New Yorkers like Woody Allen take sides when it suits their personal needs (sex, money, status, etc.), but not out of any principled stance. In the Manhattan-Hamptons fish bowl being a liberal usually gets you more “toys”.
