We got our dog from Watermelon Mountain Ranch where they are a no kill rescue shelter. He was one of 11 pups from a mom that was described as "some kind of australian shepherd." They called him Choo-Choo. That wasn't going to stand. The words of that great classic "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" ran through my head - Getting 'bout as oiled as a diesel train - and the puppy was named "Diesel."

We have since figured out that he is mostly Kelpie. They are VERY smart herding dogs. Diesel herds us. He tells us when to go to bed, when to get up, when to go to work, etc. He has also figured out how to turn door knobs and open doors. The door to the warehouse at work has an auto-closer, but a pull down handle in place of the knob. He has figured out that he can pull down the handle, back up on his hind legs, and scoot around the door before it closes. Smartest...dog...ever.

Ballad Of A Dog Named Stains

(Stevens/Johnson/Lawry/Grenga)
Red Peters with Smelly Water
featuring The Dickner Brothers (Iben, Uben & Heben)

I was sittin’ out on the porch the other night
reminiscing about the good ole days
and how my grandson Bobby and I would finish up chores
and mosey on into town.
Heck, we were poor back then
but we loved window shopping.
And I recall how excited Bobby’d get
‘specially when we stopped by the pet shop.
you see, there was this one little puppy
that he really took a hankerin’ to
and he’d look up at me and say
“Grandpa... if that was my dog, I’d name him Stains,
cuz of that splash of white on his coat.”
Well, right then and there, I made a up my mind,
that I’d get that little critter for Bobby
so that following mornin’, I cashed in a savings bond and brought the little mutt home.
Darnit, I couldn’t tell you who was happiest that day,
me, Bobby or that there dog.
Them two were inseparable ....
why, you’da need a crowbar to separate those two.
And to this day, I can still hear the boy hollerin’ after that dog...
still hear him calling... calling out his name...

CHORUS (sung)
Come Stains! Come Stains!
I still can Hear him calling...Come Stains!

Try to keep him away from Arthur Dent. They have a history.

That’s a hoot. Too bad Rex never met Mr. Bob who’d give Ol’ Rex a run for his money in all matters piddling. I’ve seen rose bushes scatter when he rounds the corner.

This was 25 years ago, and he didn’t last a week before going back to the pound. He liked the floors more than he liked the litter box. The best part of it all was a couple of times when different women I knew asked me what the cute little kitties name was, and I got to tell them it was “Slartibartfast.” (I was heavily into Scott Adams at the time) The looks on their faces were priceless.

That is so true of the cat’s secret name. But we had one and I think we finally discovered his true name. It was Norman. He had previously been Night-rate, Nixon, and some others.

I do love Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, from which your poem is quoted.

I call my cat Kisa, which is Russian for Kitty, or so I am told. I know that cats love to be called names that begin with the K sound and end with the Y sound. But what my cat calls herself, I haven’t a clue.

I do use the name of a cat in Eliot’s book as part of my e-mail user name as my personality is very like that particular cat.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, No, I am not a crazy cat lady. I just have the one or perhaps it is vice versa. She was a comfort to me in the time of grief and I appreciate her for that.

Our clan is Hurley from Co. Limerick. My niece recently acquired a lab-something and named him “Hurley.”. My sister is a daily golfer. They found an abused beagle on the side of the road. After a vet visit, they called her “Mulligan.”

My grandfather-in-law had a dog he named Diddybiteye” so when anyone asked the dog’s name Pa would reply “diddybiteye” and the person would say “No, I just wondered what his name was.” Pa never got tired of that joke.

“...the puppy was named “Diesel.”

My inlaws have a dog named Diesel. I did know why they named him that, but I’ve forgotten.

He’s a lab, but I think he’s definitely got some pit bull in him somewhere.

He was really the devil for a while, but last I saw him he was a sweetie pie, very mellowed out.

So mellow I let him come outside with me one day when we were the only two up. I”m not a dog person and normally I would not do that. So, Diesel was pretty chill that day.
