College sports' governing body today suspended Penn State's football team from postseason bowl play for four years and fined the university $60 million for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
The team also must vacate all wins from 1998 through 2011.
"The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records," the NCAA said in a statement. "Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. In addition, the NCAA reserves the right to impose additional sanctions on involved individuals at the conclusion of any criminal proceedings."
The fines are to be paid into an endowment for non-university programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims, the NCAA said.
"The NCAA recognizes that student-athletes are not responsible for these events and worked to minimize the impact of its sanctions on current and incoming football student-athletes," the statement said. "Any entering or returning student-athlete will be allowed to immediately transfer and compete at another school. Further, any football student-athletes who remain at the university may retain their scholarships, regardless of whether they compete on the team."

Give the pink mafia another decade or so and their perversions, even toward young boys, won't even be a crime anymore.
Yes, Penn State is currently on a 160 or so losing streak right now.
Apples/Oranges.
Mrs. Sandusky probably would not have been enrolled in a PSU sanctioned camp. Plus I assmume Mrs. Sandusky was of legal age.
That's why JoePa refused to retire: he was determined to beat Bobby in career wins.
Sorry, I meant no, games did occur but Penn State “lost”.
Correction:
Shouldn’t have to fund THAT either.
What flavor is your Kool-aid?
Clearly not in the scope of NCAA authoority.
I hope the criminal courts do get involved.
He was also afraid of what his predecessor would find out.
it took you long enough to google it.
“Predecessor” should be “successor”.
I think you nailed it exactly. There is essentially a lynch mob mentality right now in this case. He clearly mishandled, but the extent is being bent way out of proportion. I wish the NCAA had waited for more info than just the Freeh report....although for the current players, this decision now actually helps them since they are released to play elsewhere without any penalties. Although, it is still late in anticipation of this season, any ,later and they would have definitely wasted a year of eligibility.
the Paterno family is not being of any help either.
Penn State sanctions
$60 million fine
Vacation of wins from 1998-2011 (112 wins)*
Four-year postseason ban
Players may transfer and play immediately at other schools
Athletic department on probation for five years
* Joe Paterno record now 298-136-3; fifth on FBS all-time list
And I thought Vandy was bad.
I will admit when I posted that, I hadn’t reade the full article and was only going by the summary. It makes more sense. I generally don’t trust the NCAA, and honestly don’t view them as having any general integrity. Upon further investigation, I found the students who do leave will be losing their scholarships. They will either lose the scholarship and have to pay as a walk-on at their new school or, if the new school gives them a scholarship, it will come from a scholarship from another student. So maybe the NCAA should have taken some extra money to cover that, because it still seems to me that the players who had nothing to do with this are getting screwed.
Nonsense. Paterno is dead. Due process protects people, not legacies. Paterno's legacy has no rights. If it was important to him he should have acted to protect it while he was alive.
“No, bum rap sounds more like what Sandusky liked to give to little boys”
“Stiff penalties,” too!
