After some technical problems, the search for the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra has begun near the reef slope off the west end of Nikumaroro, a tiny uninhabited island between Hawaii and Australia where the legendary aviator may have landed and died as a castaway 75 years ago.

The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) is carrying on the the hunt, which relies on a torpedo-shaped Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) called Bluefin-21 and a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV).

Just something to take a break from the usual. (I added conspiracy as a topic because I remember stories about her disappearance always turning up on those "Unexplained Mysteries" - type shows.) The TIGHAR website has some day-to-day technical info.

Still.

After decades.

Well, maybe there is something specific they hope to find in the wreckage that makes this all worthwhile.

I had a now-deceased friend 30 years ago who swore that Amelia Earhart was captured by the Japanese and died in a POW concentration camp.

They have already found evidence on the island that there were Americans on that island. The artifacts suggest that they belonged to either her or her navigator. A knife was found, for example.

Seems like she could be an inspirational figure for young women, so maybe this could spur some sort of quality documentary.

They have already found evidence on the island that there were Americans on that island.

It's come in bits and pieces over several years, and from the same general site on the island (except for the aluminum). From memory: part of an American pocket knife of the brand/model listed on Earhart's manifest; the American heel to an woman's blucher (flat-heeled shoe), Earhart's era and approximately Earhart's size; the broken bottom of an American hand lotion bottle of a type used by Earhart, of her era; part of a cosmetics compact of the type used by Earhart, or the same era; a Sextant box of the type used by Fred Noonan, of the right era and style based on serial number; and a few other items, such as aircraft aluminum used by natives (it was once inhabitated) on the other side of the island with a rivet pattern similar to that of an Electra.

Nikumaroro is a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. Whoever she was, an American woman was appears to have been stranded there during Earhart's era.

You saw the same TV program that I saw. :-)

I didn’t want to go into so much detail.

I did, but there have been a couple of discoveries since that program. I think the compact was one of them and I don't remember the other.

Again, there was no positive proof that Earhart was on that island - but there was sufficient proof for me to believe that an American woman of Earhart's era was on that remote tropical island, as a castaway.
