A once green fingered Minnesota man is ruing not reading the labels on the weed killer he bought after it killed all the grass on his 40,000 square foot lawn.
Turning the previously lush green grass to dead, arid scrubland, Lake Elmo resident Rob Olson only wanted to get rid of the weeds from his two and a half acre lawn.
Instead, Olson says three employees at Dege Garden Centre consulted with him about which weed product to buy and fatefully he purchased five bottles of the multi-purpose killer at $35 a pop.
The weed killer in fact contained a pre-emergent grass killer too which not only destroyed the grass but will prevent it from being resseeded or sodded for up to six months.
Having applied the product to his garden, Olson observed the grass begin to fade and called up the garden centre to demand to know what had happened.
Upon realising his mistake, Olson became furious with Ferti-lome, the makers of the dual grass and weed killer, which Olson claims is not clearly marked.
In an email a spokesman for Ferti-lome said that instructions are 'related directly to the product' and are contained in a booklet which is attached to the back of the bottle.

One of my neighbors did this a few years ago.
His wife bought the wrong stuff.
This was a big lawn, several acres, and he had a tractor mounted sprayer.
After the first week, we were all asking what the heck happened?
I’ll be the first to admit not knowing very much about cystic fibrosis but i can’t imagine all the chemicals he puts on his lawn would help his children.
To me, the clover is annoying. The white blooms pop back out within a day of mowing, so the sunny areas of the yard look perpetually in need of mowing. I'm embracing moss in the shaded areas, which is most of it. Wild ferns coming up too. Kind of nice, but it still needs occasional mowing, stray unwanted vegetation.
Along with those little white blossoms come the bees. Lots and lots of them. Clover honey is just that, from clover.
Beware walking in blooming clover with bare feet!
I learned that lesson the hard way when I really young.
That is a very retro solution! Years ago people had gorgeous lawns using clover as a natural weed and feed in their lawn. Some decided clover in a lawn was a weed and the battle began. I am going to put clover back in my yard, little kids like it too- gives them something to do, they can look for four leaf clovers.
no one read the clearly marked label there either
.
I am wondering if the Marketing Department at Double Play has contacted him about doing an endorsement?
“Double Play: Works as Advertised!”
You’re in high clover now.
no one read the clearly marked label there either
.
It looked like my lawn had been hit be a meteor shower.
I know many don’t like to see the blooms up and think lawns w/clover don’t look manicured- but I like the look.
Accusing the Daily Mail of being “international news” is out of line. The only reason it’s more credible than the Enquirer is the accent.
whd23,
I bought the white clover on Amazon.
Must be some sort of British acres.
Thanks!
Seems like a good time to bring in some rock ground cover. That’s just to much grass to mow.
Grass can go a relatively long periods without moisture but it cannot go forever. Whether the lawn is dormant or dead depends on just how long the drought has been in effect and the temperature during the drought.
Grass type also has a bearing on how stressed a lawn will become. Zoysia and Bermuda grass tolerate drought well but even these grasses will die if there is no moisture for 2-3 weeks and temps are past 90 degrees.
The stuff I used says it kills the ground for up to a year.
