This devastating photo tells the tragic story of a family dog, shot dead by a police officer as he pursued a robbery suspect on Sunday. Monkey got caught up in the chaos of a foot pursuit along Hodges Street in Lake Charles, Louisiana as officers chased teens believed to have beaten a man in a mall parking lot before stealing his car which they then abandoned. The dog was in a back yard on the street when she heard the commotion and ran out through an open gate.

Now if the dog had nabbed the fleeing crook... you think the cops would have waited for the owner to come, or shot it anyhow?
That's a very good point. I used to deliver newspapers door to door in my (much) younger days and encountered many dogs, not all of which were happy to see me. Never received more than a nip at the heels.
I have a feeling that it is SOP in police manuals to shoot animals that get in the way of a policeman doing his duty. If so, I feel that some discretion should be used and that dogs should only be shot if they pose a clear danger - and even then, only be shot with tranquilizer gun whenever possible.
I do not know the entire story so I'll reserve judgement, but on the surface, it does not appear that lethal force was necessary here.
Yes, Hi Tech: for shame.
police are such dorks
today they were outside our building hoping to catch the man who beat up his girlfriend, with the lights flashing as if! stupid clutzes
I’m not defending the act of shooting this poor dog. I’m just saying, lock your gates. I believe in strong fences with locked gates. It’s just the state of our country now. There is an army of illegals roaming the countryside and the police forces are more and more militarized and bureaucratic. I don’t care how safe you think your town is. Lock your gates.
I don't expect that from a policeman but, come one, ignore the dog - don't shoot it.
Why don’t you both go read the story. Then rejoin the thread.
Labs are happy dogs that are almost always smiling, which exposes their teeth.
Police shoot dog ping
According the the police report, the dog WAS chasing the scumcrook from the backyard into the front, when the cop came running by the FRONT yard and the dog *turned attention* to the cop.
Don’t assume every story has every detail in it. Or that it’s correct.
This is a low-volume list so dont worry!
(Please Freep-mail me if youd like to be on or off the list.)
I did before I posted, as a dog lover, my heart broke for the dog and his owner. Not enough details or information to make a judgement, in my opinion.
“The LEOs who were respected and honored have retired; they have been replaced by stupid kids with guns.”
We saw this coming in the early 90’s. Thank “Community Policing” for this. I’m not convinced that what has transpired has been an unintended consequence.
We had a Cairn Terrier that would do that.
When she was really happy she'd smile so hard that it would tickle her nose and make her sneeze!
Looks like Woofer knew which was worse... (duck’n & runn’n!)
Interesting question...but one that isn’t relevant.
Based on the information provided in the article, the dog didn’t present a clear danger to the officer.
Why shoot it? I guess a dog’s life comes cheap?
Unfortunately, Daily Mail pictures are on the not to post list.
The dog was in the way of hot pursuit of 1 scumbag who ASSAULTED a man while stealing his car. Add to that that the dog seemed to be attacking, and it’s not shocking such a loose dog would be shot.
I don’t know all the details, but neither does anyone here. Although I seem to have seen more than some, so far. I certainly don’t jump to the assumption (you know what they say about that) that the cop is “just” a jack-booted thug.
The scum to blame here ultimately is the scum who beat up an innocent man to steal his car. He and his pals caused all this.
So some dude dressed like a cop shot your dog, then ran towards you. I would fear for my life!
