Report: Calif. to get seas rising 6 inches by 2030

The West Coast will see an ocean several inches higher in coming decades, with most of California expected to get sea levels a half foot higher by 2030, according a report released Friday.

The study by the National Research Council gives planners their best look yet at how melting ice sheets and warming oceans associated with climate change will raise sea levels along the country's Pacific coast. It is generally consistent with earlier global projections, but takes a closer look at California, Oregon and Washington.

Although the 6 inches expected for California by 2030 seem minor, the report estimated that sea levels there will be an average of 3 feet higher by 2100. About 72 percent of the state's coast is covered by sandy cliffs, and the rest include beaches, sand dunes, bays and estuaries.

Seaside cliffs will be cut back about 30 yards over the next 100 years, and sand dunes will be driven back even more, said Robert A. Dalrymple, a professor of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University and chairman of the group that wrote the report. Coastal wetlands will be able to keep pace for about 50 years, but will eventually be overwhelmed without new sources of sand, and room to move inland.

The report noted that dams hold back about a third of that sand, which once washed into the sea from the Klamath River in Northern California.

Northern California, Oregon and Washington can expect a less dramatic increase - about 4 inches by 2030 and 2 feet by 2100 - because seismic activity is causing land to rise north of the San Andreas Fault, offsetting increasing sea levels, and drop south of it. The fault runs out to sea at Cape Mendocino.

Oregon has the advantage of tough basalt formations on much of the...

This is gonna be sweet! We can all boat to work instead of driving. Plus, sea lions and mermaids in my front yard, if I remember to fill the feeders.

So ??? What’s the big deal? The only reason God made California was to keep the water from encroaching on Arizona.

No it won’t. It will drop 6 inches on the east coast. As you go north through the northwest passage you will be able to detect a very small downwards slope. The change will be much faster south of Tierra del Fuego - a 6 inch drop in about 100 miles. And in the middle of the Straits of Magellan there will simply be a drop of six inches in about two feet - rough on any hull. The Panama canal may still be usable.

Wow. We have so decimated our planet that the physical laws of nature don't apply anymore.

We have screwed up gravity!

BS. the bay in San Francisco hasn’t risen an inch since before I was born and probably before California was explored by the Russians.

Very interesting link. Thanks for posting it.

Morner says that there’s no sea level trend, just the same cycles there have been since the last Ice Age. Also, he has interesting insights into the way climatologists cherry-pick observations and falsify evidence to fit their models, instead of changing their models to fit the observations.

I’ve noticed since BO is president that my bathtub has been leaning southward. I’ve also notice that the water level in the tub is about 3 inches lower in the south end. Of course that just occurs whenever I use hot water. Cold water makes all the water the same height. With all these folks moving about, I think we need to consult with Rep Hank Johnson (D-Ga) to find if the states will tip over like Guam.

Either you forgot the sarcasm tag or you are having another D'OH! moment.

I don't use sarcasm tags or barf alerts. I assume most readers can figure out what I am getting at.

Thanks for pointing out the link to the interview with the sea-level science guy, though. I enjoyed it. Especially stuff like this:

They "know" the answer; the rest of us, we are searching for the answer. Because we are field geologists; they are computer scientists. So all this talk that sea level is rising, this stems from computer modeling, not from observations. The observations don't find it!

There is the climate scare-monger game plan in a nutshell. You start with the desired outcome (threatened catastrophe), you build computer models that give the desired outcome, then you manufacture evidence to give the whole thing credibility. Works on progressives every time.

I wonder if the scaremongers thought about the idea that it is not the seas rising but that the land is sinking. I recently heard a geologist somewhere in the maryland-virginia area stating that part of this region is doing just that, sinking because of tectonic plates or something.

He wuz Keeding...

You are aware that there are trolls, deep cover ones in FR who are clever, but not all that clever.
The Freeper Class of 2005 is rife with them. But, some have survived here much longer than that.

Without a specific hint, one never knows...
Many newer readers are, how can I put it? Susceptible to anything. Not in possession of sufficient knowledge about anything to be receptive to scams they don't understand.

Maybe not - the earth isn’t a perfect sphere but rather squished a bit. So the levels won’t be perfectly the same. However, there is also the fact that when Ice melts and it’s already floating...the net sea-level is ZERO! Ice already displaces it’s own mass.

Now if Greenland were to melt - then we got troubles!

No need for a wall.
The extra water will just flow downhill.

Oh, wait....

Google gravimetric depiction of the earth’s surface, including the oceans. The 6 inches, or 6 feet (perhaps even 60 feet) become laughingly insignificant.

My view is water level will be going DOWN by 6 inches.

We shall see which view is correct, about 18 years from now.

They are absolutely correct, I believe. The cycle will go to catastrophic global cooling by 2020, and then back to global warming by 2030.
