Tell me about Wisconsin...specifically the south east corner. What should I know?

Posted on 06/21/2012 9:45:39 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

I am considering leaving iowa and going to wisconsin. But other than cheese, beer, dairy cows, and harley davidson motorcycles I know nothing about it. I was in wisconsin one weekend about 25 years ago. What I remember was the towns and neighborhoods reminded me of ohio.

Climate, economy, cost of living, politics, crime, wildlife, any unusual laws, taxes, gun rights, recreation, night life...whatever you can think of. If close to the great lakes I assume the climate will be mild. I hope they don't have mosquitoes like in Minnesota.

The southeast corner of Wisconsin includes Milwaukee. Avoid it at all costs.

Why southeastern Wisconsin? There are much nicer areas of Wisconsin to see.

And, no, Wisconsin mosquitoes are nothing like Minnesota mosquitoes. Wisconsin mosquitoes are much bigger. And hungrier.

Waukesha and Washington counties are the GOP heartland of Wisconsin.

There is a local preemption law, so gun laws are consistent.

If you’re looking for a good place to live, I like Delafield or Mukwonago. Small town feel, but convenient to MKE.

A lot really depends on what you’re looking for. I live in the city of Waukesha. It’s a good place to live, but is a bit more “urban” than some folks would like.

Most of the suburban communities in Milwaukee County are still good places to live, but a conservative will be a bit alone.

I grew up in New Berlin WI, a suburb approx 30 minutes southwest of Milwaukee. I agree that living in Milwaukee is to be avoided due to Detroit-like problems brought on by decades of Dem mismanagement. However, it does positive aspects (Summerfest, Performing Arts Center). The surrounding burbs are great places to live and raise families and relatively untainted by Dem madness.

What else would you need to know? You already mentioned all the fun stuff! (except for ice fishing. . . which is just an excuse to drink beer of course)

I wholeheartedly agree that most places in Wisconsin are nicer than the SE part.

I emphatically disagree that Wisconsin's mosquitoes have anything on Minnesota's.

Yes!!

Becoming a red state makes someone think of moving here finally.

If you want to be near the lake, consider the community of Port Washington. Sort of a new England like sea town about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee.

Any of the ring counties around Milwaukee are great. And then when you want some activities, venture into the city for the sports events or lakefront activities. Also, property taxes and insurance are much lower if you live outside Milwaukee County.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the very best thing about living in Wisconsin: Gov. Scott Walker!

And, the biggest one day Fish Fry in the world (I think). Port is beautiful and 10 degrees cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. There are beaches, parks and it does have a small NE town feel. Salmon galore. Lots of fisherman. It is affordable too.

I want to move out of Wisconsin, but Ozaukee county is the best if I am staying. lol

You do have to deal with Packermania, but I just kinda avoid all that.

All areas outside of cities are more conservative than liberal except Dane County, I live in Pleasant Prairie, which is in Kenosha County(the southeast tip of Wisconsin)Thirty Miles for Milwaukee. The city of Kenosha voted overwhelmingly for Tom Barret, But the rest or the county voted Big tome for Scott Walker, Barret only won Kenosha County by 705 votes,
