Cobra’s only stand up and flatten their neck when they feel threatened. Those so called snake charmers playing musical instrument makes the cobra sway...it is not the music, it feels threatened by the instrument swaying in front of it’s face.

I grew up in India and snakes indeed slithered in the house on occasion because we always had the doors open during day. But if you ignored them, they never attacked or bite. Very few snakes will attack humans unprovoked except the black mamba of Africa and one or two other rare species.

You are correct that if one steps accidentally on a snake it is going to bite you in reflex action. So one has to be very careful walking in brush known to be infested with snakes.

My father had a farm business and we have seen 15 foot long cobra’s in the fields. They are farmer’s friend because they keep rodent’s under check. So the snakes were left alone.

Rattlers don’t always inject a lot of venom, but when they really get pissed off at you they can dump a lethal dose.

If the rattle is wet you won’t hear a thing. They also break off, you may find a big rattler with nothing on it’s tail but a hard scale. All the rattles are is a collection of un shed tail scales. They don’t grow separately.

What did you shoot the rattlers with? A shotgun? Just curious. I imagine they aren’t that easy to hit if you don’t have a shotgun.

Yes, a 12 ga. auto. I gave up hunting a long tome ago, but I keep it handy and loaded as a crime stopper. I keep it loaded with 5 rounds 00 buck, and I don't have any birdshot. So, it's overkill, but very effective.

Also, once they’re coiled up in defensive position, they can remain pretty still, for the most part, and I’d wager that you could take a .22 rifle and put one right through it’s head.

There were rattlesnakes in upstate New York when I grew up there 50 years ago - it’s definitely not a new phenomenon.

I wouldn’t bet against you. I know a relation who “got out”. He has a few stories.
