The joke was not (IMHO) and attack on Palin as some have suggested. I mean, your supposed to think "well a hockey mom and a pit bull are really really tough so how are they different" and then he surprises you with the line about how yummy dogs are. That's how it's supposed to work, a non sequitor that makes light of some recent buzz.
But there is a problem. The subject is bizarre and distasteful to most Americans. Eating dogs is not considered a light or joking matter. In the US, eating dogs is quasi taboo. He wrote about it in his book so he can't disown it, but he really shouldn't call attention to it, that's not going to ingratiate him to anyone. Once again, IMHO. Your mileage may vary.

Excellent point....if you had done the coaching for the President, he might have pulled it off...but as he told it, it just sucked.

Thanks for the explanation. In retrospect, it seems obvious. But for me, when I heard “hockey mom,” that converted immediately to Sarah Palin. Then the joke became Sarah Palin vs. a pit bull, and incomprehensible.

I thought much the same as you with the addendum that the dog joke was indicative of a very sophomoric sense of humor, more what I would expect from a high school or college student than from a 50 year-old man.
There is no adult in control in this administration, The manchild is surrounded by self-obsessed, elitist, young liberals. They think like college kids, they act like college kids, and they have demonstrated all the leadership and acumen of . . . college kids.

The joke is a play on Palin’s ‘08 acceptance speech, when she described herself as a hockey mom and then asked and answered what the difference was between a hockey mom and a pit bull—lipstick.
It was clearly a shot at Palin, but the original post misses the point by saying it was nonsensical—it was a turnaround of a well-known Palin quip.

The joke was not (IMHO) and attack on Palin as some have suggested. Oh yeah it was. He set up the joke with a comment about Palin.
