If you NC FReepers have some advice I would sure appreciate it. I need to be in a location within 30mi north of Charlotte and preferably within 10mi of the Interstate. I do not know the area. This could happen in 8 weeks and my beautiful Tennessee home will be put on the lease market. Cheers!
Don’t know how much $$ you want to spend but Huntersville, Cornelius, Concord, Mathews, Pineville, Gastonia and even down to Ft Mill SC are all ring towns to Charlotte... Of all of them Gastonia might be the least expensive.
You could add a few miles and get up to Kannapolis and almost to Salisbury and Statesville...The interstates are pretty good feeding into Charlotte tho I77 is only 2 lanes and quite busy during normal rush hours.
Good Luck
I must be north of the city. SC is not an option. This is a critical power job serving Charlotte and Greensboro. Charlotte being the emphasis. Thanks
I guess one other thing to add is rush hour becomes a thing of the past. I will be 24-7 to take care of critical information in the central NC area. My focus is a nice area where my family can live.
I recommend either Huntersville, where I live, where Charlotte is a straight shot down 77, about 12 miles. Or, Lowe’s Speedway Blvd., Concord, Embassy Suites, about 12 miles from downtown Charlotte. Traffic is bad about 7-9am and 5-6:30 pm.
Sorry, thought you were visiting, not relocating. I agree with poster, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson. Maybe even Mooresville.
What I need to understand is where the water is, and the most pleasant areas 30mi north on 85. A city dweller is not me.
I am going to take a hike down to the Stones River and hope that I get some good advice. Outside of that North Carolina here I come! :^)
I’ve only passed through [stayed overnight on a few occasions], but the Concord/Lake Norman area is beautiful, I’d live there in a heartbeat.
The only bad thing I can think of is we always had to stop and clean our windshield after driving through Lake Norman - bazillions of bugs doing the kamikaze.
You might check out this site for schools:

I live in eastern NC, so I have little direct knowledge of stuff north of Charlotte. My brother-in-law lives in the Weddington area in Union County, but that is south of Charlotte. Union County is a good place to be though.

Avoid Mecklenburg County at all costs. Everything is centered around the wants and needs of the city of Charlotte, taxes are HIGH, and the county-wide school district sucks!
Huntersville is a good option or possibly Davidson. They are both by the interstate and by Lake Norman.
If you have children you should know that Huntersville schools are part of the Charlotte system. The Huntersville residents have been fighting it for years but have had no success in breaking away. Davidson is probably a better option for schools but it’s a college town and more liberal.
Lake Norman is a large lake. The east side is more populated but that is the side close to the interstate. The west side of the lake is more rural. I heard that Donald Trump bought out a large area of land by the lake and is developing it.
I should have added - the Democrats will be holding their convention in Charlotte at the end of the summer. That is making the temporary housing market somewhat tight.
I recommend somewhere in northern Rowan (and that’s Ro-ann around here) County if you are going to be going from Charlotte to Greensboro- the interstate runs through there and it makes the commute a bit easier. Also, if you go much further south than Concord there is a bit of a Yankee infestation. If you are into a rural setting avoid Mooresville or Huntersville- they are both rapidly becoming outer suburbs of Charlotte as that cancer spreads.
Wow. I had no idea Hunterville kids were hostages of the Charlotte-Mech racist school board. Avoid at all cost!
I know nothing about Nascar, but someone who does might post whether race weekends are miserable for residents in that area.
I am the youngest of the Boomers and need to stay away from the city. Concord seems to be the closest I can get. Charlotte Proper is off my Radar. Thanks to all that have responded to this thread.
“Concord seems to be the closest I can get.”
I spent a week there once. Ugh. Why do you need to live north of Charlotte? Is it because you will be working in N Charlotte?
