One of Australia's richest men, Clive Palmer, has unveiled plans for a 21st century version of the Titanic to be built in China, with its first voyage from England to New York set for 2016.
Palmer, a self-made mining billionaire, said he has commissioned state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct Titanic II with exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor.
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement, released on Monday.
"Titanic II will sail in the northern hemisphere and her maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016.
"We have invited the Chinese navy to escort Titanic II on its maiden voyage to New York."

Note to self, Chinese attacking in 2016. Buy more bullets and iodine tablets.
That might also not turn out too well.
The Olympic class was a fine design. It was scourged with bad luck and poor judgement (but probably really can’t blame them for going with instinct). Titanic opened up far too many sections to survive (but did better than expected), and Britannic hit a mine meant to sink it. Olympic, the oldest, went on for 20 years.
Don’t know, but Cunard bought its rival White Star back c.1930, not a successor.
Thanks for the information about this and, in turn, here's an ahoy going out to those on the Titanic ping list.

You are exactly right. The Titanic did much better than expected.
They deliberately played down the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original.
Another "Titanic" would only reminder the world of the fate of the first.

If I were a billionaire, I’d build an exact replica of the Titanic...nothing modern in it, same amount of lifeboats, etc.—but it would be a tourist attraction. It wouldn’t actually sail. Titanic fans all over the world would flock to see it.
