SEATTLE (AP) Phil Humber threw the first perfect game in the majors in almost two years, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 4-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
It was baseball's 21st perfect game and first since Philadelphia's Roy Halladay threw one against the Florida Marlins on May 29, 2010. It was the third in White Sox's history, joining Mark Buehrle against Tampa Bay on July 23, 2009, and Charles Robertson against Detroit on April 30, 1922.

Close call I’d probably be little miffed if I were a Mariner fan. Looks like he went to me though. And I know I’ve seen countless hitters called out on identical check swings. Read an article by some guy questioning it, it seemed what he was really mad about was that they cut away from his precious Yankees for 10 minutes (out of what like 6 hours?) to show it nationwide.
Twice umpires have screwed guys out of perfect games, Milt Pappas and especially the pitiable Armando Galarraga, it’s a shame Bud Selig didn’t have the balls to rectify that latter situation. So I’m glad that didn’t occur again.

Why or why did this game have to be on Fox?! At least Joe Buck and Tim McCarver didn’t call it (not that Dave Sims and Eric Karros did a particularly good job). I presume they were in Boston.
Meanwhile, the team that drafted Humber (Mets) is still in search of it’s first no-hitter.
It was a treat to see the conclusion of only the 21st perfect game ever. Screw the Red Sux getting blown out.

Yes. I thought Tom Seaver threw one for them, but he did that with the Reds, after the Mets traded him. IIRC, Seaver, while with the Mets came within one out of a perfect game against the Cubs though. Close but no cigar.

I looked up Seaver, he lost it with 1 out in the 9th not 2.
You may recall once Mike Mussina lost a perfecto against the Red Sox to single by the 27th batter, Jurassic Carl Everett.
Pedro Martinez was once perfect through nine against the other team never to throw a no-hitter (the Padres) the but his Expos didn’t score until the 10th, Pedro gave up a double in the bottom of the 10th and was pulled. But he at least got the win unlike the unluckiest bastard that ever lived, Harvey Haddix (a shame there is no video of that one).
I’d like to see one be tied at 0 into the 9th and won on a walkoff. As far as I know there has never been any MLB no-hitter won a walkoff let alone a perfect game. You’d think it would have happened.

And it's fun that even the Cubs won. Yesterday, Chicago had a perfect day! Screw the losers saying he didn't swing, he sure as hell did. I rewatched the play 40 times, the Johnny Damon swing in the 2005 ALDS to El Duque wasn't even as far and he was called out. F$%^^ the haters!
Humber played college ball at Rice University in Houston, TX for legendary Coach Wayne Graham.
As for losing a perfect game with a walk-off HR with two outs in the 9th, if it didn’t happen to Dave Stieb, it won’t happen to anyone.
Have any of you read The Great American Novel by Phillip Roth? One of the characters is Lefty Grove-type pitcher who struck out, on three pitches, the first 26 batters in the game, and started the 27th batter with two strikes, and then threw a strike down the middle for a “perfect perfect game,” but the ump said he was out of position and made him pitch again, and . . . well, I won’t ruin it for you.
I watched the 9th in a senior living place with a bunch of octogenarians. They were fighting over whether to change the channel back to the news.

yea, i was the deciding vote on keeping the game on for the last out. Wouldn’t ya know the last batter was 7 pitches ... If it went on for a few more pitches, they would have revolted and grabbed the remote.

That 27 strike thing sounds like the plot of some awful movie where Brendan Frasier can throw 150 MPH until he stops hating his parents or something.

The Great American Novel is outstanding; it’s a about an author who wants to write”the great American novel” after deciding that Moby Dick can’t be it because whaling does not define America, and writes about baseball, particularly about a (fictitious) Patriot League that was a third major league in the first half of the 20th century.
Yes “The Scout”. I guess every other scout was too incompetent to find the guy that could throw super hard. I was thinking it was Billy Crystal, but you were right the second time it was Albert Brooks.
That novel sounds very interesting.
