Another idea: Instead of cough syrup, try fresh lemon juice mixed with a bit of water and lots of honey, heat it up (I microwave it), then add a bit of whisky. Works great.
I will definitely give this a try the next time. It sounds sweeter to me than a shot of straight vodka. Alcohol has been used a long time for medicine... it still works great today.
