I thought by now someone would make a joke about making a thirteen mile jump from twelve miles up. Oh, well.
I remember reading about Col. Kittinger’s jump from a high altitude balloon but always thought this was research for the space program. Did he become an astronaut?
The highest jump ever recorded was on August 16, 1960, by Captain Joseph Kittinger — 102,800 feet. Kittinger suffered a partial seal failure on the way up and the reduced pressure at altitude cause his arm and hand to swell to their former sizes. Kittinger attained a speed of 614 mph during the free fall phase of his jump.
Kittinger was part of Project EXCELSIOR at Holloman AFB, New Mexico. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger
You wouldn't mind if we don't believe everything you say, would you?
(N.B. A copy of this is being sent to Jim Rob because he deserves to know what is being done to his "baby," in his name.)
Not personally, but professionally, yes I do mind.
My statement is entirely correct. If you are foolish to care to bet otherwise, we can both deposit $100,000 in escrow with a good Conservative lawyer. If I'm wrong, you get $200K. If I'm right, I get $150K, and Jim Rob gets $50K
Wadda deal!
Nothing personal, but it has been my personal observation that FR is in intellectual and popular decline because most Admin Moderators are a bunch of undereducated, anonymous, power hungry snots who possess little if any journalistic or legal skills or life experience.... and even less common sense.... and continue to prove it every day by their actions
It is the general feeling among many former FReepers who I stay in touch with that the Admin Moderators here are exceptionally unqualified to make important decisions involving most anything. We have seen you kill important stories, "modify" others to make them meaningless and often incorrect, and generally do all you can to support your false sense of ego-centric righteous authority.
Ask yourself one simple question, rather than so-called "moderating," why aren't you working to develop some real stories that might interest people or make actually make a contribution to Conservatism and/or America... and pardon me for stating the obvious that issues that benefit Conservatism automatically benefit America.
We are facing a major crisis to the degree that America has never previously experienced. You, and by extension FR, can be part of marshaling public influence to send Obama home, of you can continue to exercise your untrained authority over a diminishing field of followers.
I do not post this out of hate or anger. I'm simply trying to give you a dose of something called "reality." Until a few years ago, FR was a site leading Conservatives to victory, followed closely by journalists and feared by liberals. Please do not continue to expedite it's descent into meaninglessness.
Let there not be a joke along the lines of:
Did you hear about the guy who became the new King of Portugal?
Yeah, it's sort of like being a Admin Moderator at FR. You don't really have to be qualified to do anything, and although you think you have power, behind your back, no one cares because every who matters has left.
P.S. Nothing personal in any of the above, but as you can see, I do not tolerate fools very well.... and having been on the phone with people in DC most of the day,... I have already had my daily fill!
Colonel Joe is stll a great and very active man. We all went flying in an anfib less than year ago.
His jump was part of an early pre-space exploration program. He was offered a chance to join the Mercury program, but he knew that if he had, his tiny, under-bidgeted program would suffer.
I’m not changing a thing.
The problem is, you have built a great program... and it... and you now suffer form their foolishness.
We wish you the absolute best, but there are those working behind your back to destroy FR.

We all wish you the absolute best, but there are those working behind your back to destroy FR, just to build their own egos.
‘course he’s an advisor to this project at age 83. On the video at their site you can hear him wish Godspeed to Baumgartner during the launch. Baumgartner says, “Thanks, that means a lot to me.”
I remember the Life magazine coverage of Kittinger’s jump right after he made it. It seemed really “out there” at the time, and it still does. That photo of Baumgartner standing at the hatch of his capsule has the same effect. It’s surreal.
How ‘bout “Hell no to the Nth power.”
I’d love to do it, except that chair he had in there looked awful comfortable. I think I might have a hard time tearing myself loose.
I’m a big proponent of what I like to call “Selective Bravery.”
There are things I will do and have done that the average person would pale at.
Jumping out of aircraft is ~not~ one of them.
But you have never had the pleasure of standing in the door of a creaky C-119 with an angry E-6 up your ass, threatening to kick your butt from Fr. Benning to Ft. Bliss if you refuse at the door!
Ah, the pleasures of Army life......
:)
I know who currently holds the power in DC, too. Perhaps you could have chosen a close to your post more likely to be impressive to conservatives... ;-)
Cheers
Kittinger is providing technical support for Baumgartner’s record attempt later this summer. He is going for 130K.
This jump was just practice.
Go Felix!
