California Freepers (Vanity)

Sigh...to make a long story short, my wife has decided that she's getting out of Texas, with or without me.

She's listed California, Oregon and Washington as possible places where she'd like to relocate. Well, I'm allergic to the cold, so that leaves California.

Any input on possible locations in California where she can "Escape the redneck mentality" and I can still live around semi-sane individuals?

My brother is a huge biker. My house backs up on a wonderful bike trail that goes up into the mountains to a reservoir.

Uhmmm he calls me and my family rednecks because his wife isnt happy with him or this state and Im the problem?

I live in CA and consider myself a redneck, west coast style, and I have no problem with the term redneck. It's no big deal nor reason to call someone an AH, IMO.

I have more of an issue with thin skinned people, who are easily offended.

Julian up in the mountains an hour out of San Diego used to be a nice place.

However, it’s still not high enough and far too easy to reach by far too many millions including Mexicans and Chinese troops coming through Mexico.

Hi, Melas ...

A good exercise might be for you and your wife to each separately complete the “Find Your Best Place” section of the “Best Places to Live” website at http://www.bestplaces.net/.

I believe you can limit your search to only the states you are interested in (if not, simply look at the cities in California, Oregon and Washington that are returned).

Afterwards, find the places that appear on both of your lists and consider those first.

On another note, if you decide you may be interested anywhere in San Diego County or Southwest Riverside County (cities of Temecula and Murrieta), send me a private email. As a former residential real estate appraiser I oversaw about 5,000 appraisals in the region and I know it well. There are definitely quality areas that are reasonable for conservatives to consider (even if the state, as a whole, is a mess).

Lastly, I respect that you put your family first. Even though others bring up valid points here about California, nothing can take trump being with the ones we love.

Best wishes ...

Depends on what you need...

Plenty of great areas to live in CA....Depends on your money, your job, and your wants as far as weather.

Of course you know that CA is a liberal cess pool. Does your wife understand this?

I'd give you some of my top spots there....but, it all depends on what you need...and want.

If you’re serious about moving here from Texas then you’re a fool for the following reason:
1. You’re following your wife rather her following you, she may not say it now but her respect for you has been lost as you’ve given up your leadership position.
2. The laws in CA are unbelievably bad and invasive. Remember to register your guns within 15 days of moving here or you’ll be up for some serious charges if they catch you. Also if you have any of those evil high cap magazines or assault rifles leave them at the CA border or sell them before you leave Texas.
3. Be aware that in Texas if she decides to divorce you you’re only on the hook for 3 years (max) alimony but in CA it’s for life (not saying but once they loose respect for you things happen).
4. The state is run by a bunch of looney tunes that next year will most likely have a super majority that will enable them to ram through any and all tax increases making this state even more unfordable to live in.
5 Unemployment is running at 12% officially and closer to 20% unofficially so if you’re looking for a job forget about it. If you’re thinking about opening a business think again, the regulations will bury you and the overhead cost are through the roof.

That said if you still insist on moving here my advise is to stay as close to the coast as possible. If you like the sprawling city type life then most parts of Orange County or down in San Diego are good places to live (if you can afford it as while prices have come down they are still way out there and over $1M is typical). If you like the rural life then Santa Barbra and the areas around there are great places to live, again not cheap but you are paying for the great weather. Don’t go too rural or you’ll end up back in “red-neck” country even here in CA so stay close to the coast and you’ll be neck deep in soy milk latte sipping liberal s$%theads with a few decent folks sprinkled around.

Two things keep me here right now, a high paying job and family. If I loose either one I’m bolting for Texas so if you’re interested in a 1950’s shack close to the coast for $600k come talk to me.

Santa Barbara has a reputation for being extremely snooty, elitist, clanish . . . exclusionist . . . virtually impossible for new comers to break into in any significant way . . . except for with other newcomers.

Also—not a high enough elevation and too close to the coast.

BTW it isnt well thought out to leave a place with no alimony laws to go to one with very vigorous alimony laws while ones wife is threatening to leave. JMO

INDEED.

And the one who NEEDS THE RELATIONSHIP LEAST

IS

in !CONTROL! of the relationship.

And she’s already on record as caring less for the relationship than where she lives.

Not a good sign, imho.

Orange County, near the ocean—Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Sunset Beach, Seal Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, Corona del Mar, all are wonderful. It’s like living in paradise temperature-wise, but with more people. She’ll love it. I’ve heard San Diego County is good, too. If you go inland you’ll have to deal with hotter temperatures but it’s not too bad and it always cools down at night.

I was born in Houston and we left when I was three and I STILL remember how hot is was there and how blindingly bright the sun is. It’s a place I never want to go back to.

Plus, with Prop 13 your property taxes will not fluctuate wildly up. Let’s face it, yes, some states have lower taxes, but in reality, they all, in one way or the other, get their pound of flesh.

It’s a good time to buy a house here, too. The property values are a LOT lower than they used to be.

Considering one of the oldest and better mountain bikes was built near or in Marin County.....http://www.marinbikes.com/bicycles_ms/sfstore.php.....I find your comment odd.

Temecula: Back country there is nice, just the poster was wanting to avoid ‘redneck mentality’ which is prevasive there. Honestly, I’d prefer the Elsinore to Norco area over Temcula. Especially because of some of the horrid traffic on the 15 corridor during commutes. In any case, you need to be aware of the really high summer heat there.

Ramona was good too, until the casino wars with Barona and the gangs.

Winchester would be as far south and east I’d go in that neck of the woods. Julian and the like are nice, but I’ve sworn off living in fire areas anymore.

Does this work in reverse? Would your wife follow YOU to hell and back?

BEG her to reconsider! Choosing between Texas vs Cesspoolifornication ...
is laughable!

DONT DO IT!

It’s not cold in Oregon or Washington btw, unless you’re up in elevation.

They call it the left coast for a reason.

Will she consider Wyomng or Montanta or Idaho? They are every bit as beautiful as the left coast states, and IMO more so! If you’re TRULY looking for some semblance of sanity!

GOOD LUCK!

Big place. Lotsa variety in terrain.

Coast: San Diego, Orange, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties historically voted GOP. (2008 may have broken the string). These places appeal most to me because of weather. The downside is they are costly. I am happier in a modest cottage near the coast, than a bigger place miles inland where it gets hot (not as hot and uncomfortable as muggy south and midwest of this great country).

With the exception of big cities, the west coast states are not liberal, and you should not let people on the internet mislead you about that.

California is headed over the cliff, economically speaking. Most of the ‘outback’ counties have sane enough residents, but if you plan on moving to one of the urban/suburban centers, you will quickly find that you are living in a lunatic ward. On top of the impending financial collapse, the idiot legislature (dominated by commie RATs for four decades)and the idiot governor (the retread, Moonbeam Brown)is about to raise taxes, mostly because one out of every three people living on welfare lives in California. On that note, California already has a nasty state income tax whereas Texas does not have one at all. If it wasn’t for certain personal financial reasons, I’d move to Texas where I would enjoy a great deal more liberty. California is essentially the old USSR with better weather.
