CARBONITE - customer reviews (stay away from this service!)
Better Business Bureau ^ | March 5, 2012 | Better Business Bureau

(Example, from December 2011)

"Trying to restore 100Gb+ and the restore keeps dying, and support people hung up me and disconnected from Chat and are totally useless, and software disconnects from service during a restore (based on the log file) and installation gets corrupted and have to un-install and re-install all over again. I have have been trying to restore my data for 1 week straight with a partial success. I finally had to go and restore one sub-directory at a time and do two - three sub-directories until it gets corrupted and have to restart the whole process over! How can a company stay in business?????? Software is so bad!"

I can’t imagine having my personal data flying all around the internet for anyone with a sniffer to view...

They couldn't without your encryption key.

Look for Norton Ghost. I think the full-featured product is relatively cheap, but the text-based, scriptable program still exists and is usually freeware.

That'll do the disk-to-disk mirroring OR you could always invest in mirroring hardware that will create an array for you. I used a SATA RAID enclosure like this one, ran my backups, removed one disk to store, and installed a third disk in that disk's place. The array hardware will rebuild the mirror, and you'll be back to redundant storage.

What happens if your house of office burns down?

I keep all my backup media in a couple of those Sentry fire-safes.

Sounds like he was treating his listeners like a bunch of saps then. I guess making more money was more important to him than maintaining his integrity.

You're confused.
Rush was taking money for promoting a (hopefully) safe product over competing brands. Some listeners might have found use for the service, and apparently plenty of people do. If there are saps in his audience, like you for example, that's not Rush's fault. Anyway, those commercials always reminded me to do an updated backup of my own stuff.

Thanks, Rush!

You are very welcome.

I work for a Fortune 500 information strage company and have to laugh at their efforts to get everyone into "The Cloud".

I understand that they wish to enhance an create revenue streams but...c'mon. The Cloud? Sheesh.

“So rush has for years pushed a substandard product that he was personally endorsing?”

If truth be told, I’ve always avoided products sold on the Rush Limbaugh show. With very few exceptions, they have always struck me as overpriced.

When I see the old gents with AL and VFW hats I always stop and pull out a 20.
For it I get one of their crappy 10 cent Poppies.
A bargain for what they did for me.
I’m going to patronize Rush’s next sponsors even if I don’t need their product - or if it’s crap. All of ‘em.

I only did business with two of these crud sponsors.

The slimy Left would imprison or kill Rush for speaking on behalf of conservative values if they could.

Thanks Rush!

I have dealt with backup issues for 35+ years. You already are aware of storing backup medium offsite. The other backup issue which hardly any one talks about is how do you know your data is already partially corrupted by the hardware? Backing up corrupt data will obviously create corrupt backup.

So if the data is critical and very difficult to reproduce, you should have a procedure to periodically examine the entire data file for integrity. If that is not possible then you should keep older backup media around instead of re-using them very frequently.

As for selecting a automated backup software, I have no recommendation since I no longer manage computer systems since I retired dozen years ago. For my personal use, I use manual backup since the number of files changing frequently are few.

>”So rush has for years pushed a substandard product that he was personally endorsing?”<

I have gone through this entire thread and people feeding off this one remark have turned this supposition into an Urban Myth. What the heck is going on here?

Rush USES Carbonite for his personal and Business needs. Unless he is now being branded a LIAR because he apologized to that flake Fluke.

My goodness, you are intelligent people. Quit promoting this baseless inference. Some people like the service including some FReepers apparently, and think it works just fine, including Rush, and others have had issues with it. That happens with every product and service.

How does that turn into Rush pushed a substandard product?
This has turned into a feeding frenzy? Give it up already.
