In many states, anti-Romney voters would be smart enough to coalesce behind Paul for strategic reasons, but not the Virginians.

Obama will NOT carry NC again!! He barely won in 2008 due to the huge African American turnout. Even though he still has that advantage, he is very unpopular here in NC - except with the "yellow dog" democrats who won't admit what a disaster he is - and what some of them will do in the privacy of the voting booth is even in doubt.

Yes, Jesse Helms had to work really hard to defeat Jim Hunt in 1984 for his third term and managed to do so by not backing down on his conservative principles. There’s even a book about that race. Thus far, has anyone written about Santorum-Casey; I understand Santorum tried to downplay his conservatism in that 2006 race. But I’m still for Saint Rick. I think he would be excellent in the office but don’t think he will ever get close to winning.

AKRON — Speaking to his largest crowd yet in his two-day swing through Ohio, presidential candidate Rick Santorum captured 74 percent of the vote at the annual Lincoln Day dinner of the Summit County Republican Party — and that was before people heard what he had to say.

These prayer photos are absolutely disgusting. The vapidity of it all is soul crushing. None of those people even understand the pitiful character of Saint Rick, and none of them are interested in his lack of a platform.

It’s all image. Persona. Feelings. None of it based on anything substantial. It’s disgusting. We got Obama based on the same sort of campaigning, and now we think that just because he can spout conservative platitudes to scratch their itching ears, that he’s going to be some Messiah?

This is a disgrace. A Saint Santorum nomination would be a terrible choice for Americans.

Santorum probably couldn’t win by himself. But Santorum/Rubio can! Bob

Hate to tell you, but Newt is done. If it isn’t Rick, it will be Milt. I’d rather have someone who will be unafraid eviscerating Obama daily, and that’s Rick. Bob

And he did not “back off” Obama, nothing of the sort. That’s what the propagandists are saying, and it isn’t true.

“These prayer photos are absolutely disgusting.”

I don’t think they’re necessarily disgusting, but they are off-putting. I tend to go with Matthew 6:6, where Christians are told to pray in secret and not make a spectacle — show off their (supposed) spirituality. Making a big production of praying in public is what the Pharisees did, and we’re told not to do that. It’s tacky, and done to get attention... IMHO.

My dad (the preacher) wasn’t thrilled with my opinion, but... oh, well.

Give us an example of what you are saying. Santorum spoke to us near Scranton in October, and without a single note, spoke for half an hour, and was spellbinding. There is a lot to Rick Santorum, and 99% of it will be good for America. Bob

So, what was Rick to tell the pastors? “No”? That would be crude and ungrateful.

“This was in Coweta County. Apparentally this is a suburb of Atlanta”

That’s only because the Paul supporters were all at the GOP function in Gwinnett County Sat where Paul won by a landslide and Newt came in second.

Interesting response! I was also remembering that scripture, though I did not know chapter and verse.

“Santorum is a major turn off. He reminds me of the busy body neighbor who wants to stick his nose in your business. YUCK.”

I’m with you on your busy-body neighbor, but I don’t think Santorum is a clone. I hope that as he grows into the Presidency, he’ll adopt a more tolerant attitude. ;-)

That said, I also hope he’s able to convince people to live more responsibly and more productively.

>>My understanding is that a two-term US senator has to really work at getting blown out of his third election, i.e. it isn’t basically easy to do.<<

You’re right. It was really tough. By November 2006 the vast majority of the voters, liberal and conservative both, were against pursuing the Iraq war. Only President Bush and a few supporters held strong, with Bush finally approving the surge, against nearly all advice, but that finally settled the fighting in our favor.

And one of his supporters at the time, Rick Santorum, who stood by both his principles and his President, paid for it dearly, losing by double digits as even Republicans deserted him.

He stuck by his principles and lost. Romney changes his principles regularly to avoid the same fate. I’ll take Santorum’s approach any day. And he’ll make a far better President because of it.

Good article. Thanks for the link.

Attorney General Mike DeWine has been at every stop with Santorum over the past two days in Ohio after announcing his switch of allegiance from Romney on Friday.

This is a remarkable side story.

Losing GA would be a bad sign for Newt, However 100 seems like a pretty small sample size to represent the whole state.

Coweta is very south of Atlanta and pretty rural. If you want to see how Ga looks, take a look at big close in counties to Atlanta - like Dekalb and Gwinett

Dekalb County:
Paul 105 63%
Sanctorum 13 8%
Romney 25 15%
Gingrich 25 15%

Gwinnett County
Ron Paul 115 42.12%
Newt Gingrich 73 26.74%
Rick Santorum 60 21.98%
Mitt Romney 25 9.16%

Most county mass meetings didn’t do a straw poll, but Dekalb, Gwinnett, and Coweta did - interesting this is reporting the only one that Gingrich did decent in. Also note, Gingrich even spoke at Gwintet meeting and still lost by a wide margin.
