Why does Adele's 'Someone Like You' make everyone cry? Science has found the formula.
-Excerpt-
Twenty years ago, the British psychologist John Sloboda conducted a simple experiment. He asked music lovers to identify passages of songs that reliably set off a physical reaction, such as tears or goose bumps. Participants identified 20 tear-triggering passages, and when Dr. Sloboda analyzed their properties, a trend emerged: 18 contained a musical device called an "appoggiatura."
An appoggiatura is a type of ornamental note that clashes with the melody just enough to create a dissonant sound. "This generates tension in the listener," said Martin Guhn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia who co-wrote a 2007 study on the subject. "When the notes return to the anticipated melody, the tension resolves, and it feels good."
Chills often descend on listeners at these moments of resolution. When several appoggiaturas occur next to each other in a melody, it generates a cycle of tension and release. This provokes an even stronger reaction, and that is when the tears start to flow.

By the way, a great , or golden, voice, is the least important element in what makes a great singer.
Note that the vinyl (LP) would appear to be better recorded:

Also note that unless you really trust your security software, don’t go to “justiceforaudiodotorg” (link on the DR site) soon. Last week it appeared the site had been hacked.
Actually, my life is full of fantastic music, exciting artists, great performances, a lot of travel, constant research and new experiences.

Missed one last night.
This one is self explanatory to the Undead Threaders.
S she doesn’t like Palin and has an occaisional potty mouth. I’m guilty as well on both scores.
So she doesn’t like Palin and has an occaisional potty mouth. I’m guilty as well on both scores.
What on Earth does not looking like Sarah Palin have to do with anything?
As far as the “potty mouth” goes, we are talking about PUBLIC image and restraint. This isn’t me or you watching Obummer at home on our TV’s. What kind of person would talk like that in front of a reporter? The upbringing, or self-respect, or something, is missing...
Now, as for her music: It’s ok, not vulgar, seems to appeal to lots of people, and is occasionally catchy. If you like it, fine! Adele has real talent, but the sound on the CD is unfortunately mashed by the music companies, making it not pleasurable for a trained ear, or even an average ear with a little exposure to good sound, to listen to. Some may think that knowing what good sound is, is a curse, but the flip side is enjoyment and involvement in the music that goes to another level. :-)
Who knows? Maybe Adele will mature a little, hook up with someone like Sheffield Lab, and make us both happy!
Have a great day!
It has everything to do with the stupid link you posted to me.
Interesting article. I almost missed it, and I think you might enjoy the read.
Yes, an interesting read. I really like Adele. She can sing and she can write music well. At only 22 years old, she has a long career ahead of her.
