Good morning gardeners! Red Devil here. JustaDumbBlonde and her husband are on their way up to Montana for a well deserved vacation. She should be able to post the thread from her remote Montana location next week. I am sure she will continue with her plans for a soil structure thread next week. Her Thread subjects are so informative and interesting. Although I have not been real active on the thread, I read each and every post. Y'all have been doing a great job!
I should be able to get some sort of a garden going this year, at our new location in the Marshall, Tx area. Crossed fingers on the garden! Peggy has done a super job of juggling her new job at a Shreveport Wal-Mart with all the running around to find a house, with a nice sized fenced in back yard, and getting the utilities turned on. It has been real hectic and energy draining for her. What a great Wife and partner! I am one lucky guy!
Lets get gardening!
The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
You're not alone. Southern California; Northern California; Oregon; and now, South Dakota,: the sweeter the pepper, the worse it does for me, even planted right next to the hotter ones.
I try every trick in the book, but always the same: the hotter they are, the bigger they get & the more of them there are.
Well that came out garbled.
Try again:
Doctor seems to think it is more of a sprain and the fact that Ive been taking ibuprophen that is causing the fluid retention. So, Im to keep legs elevated and have been prescribed a water pill. Also, he doesnt know how many hours Ive spent at the keyboard entering names into a data base (VerifytheRecall.com) so that we can challenge those pesky recall petitions aimed to oust our wonderful Governor, Lt. Governor, and 4 more Republican Senators from office.
Another week of rest is prescribed. Ill take it. Im getting new front windows next week, so I have to be home anyway.
I had a hard time keeping up with my Giant Jalapenos last year! They just exploded with growth - I told my wife that I was tired of picking them. She told me to stop picking them! She does not like hot peppers - My most successful produce and she can’t stand them - heat wise! What to do?
Wish I could help, but I don’t really like them either; I just know how to grow them!
We pick them ripe, then let them sit until slightly wrinkled & fully red; then either sliver & dry, or dry & crush them for use in both gifts & in my Thai cooking.
One or two smallish ones sliced per pint of sweet dill pickles is good. I make (have to look it up on the Net; I don’t have it handy) “Lazy Woman’s Sweet Pickles”. I additionally lime the cukes first, then use that recipe, adding dill seed & weed, and the peppers. IIRC, I also toss in some parts of the Candy Dills recipe. A little Kentucky windage while the syrup is cooking always takes place, too.
By the time they are ready, they are mildly warm; the syrup is almost thick enough to cut, and the pickles are sweet like a gherkin, but dilled enough to give a good flavor.
Fortunately for me, Anaheims are far enough on the hot side to do well for me, and those are cool enough for my taste: they mainly go for rellenos of several persuasions; or into the wife’s stir frys.
Sprain is much mo better!
Perhaps your wife does not dislike the heat of hot peppers, but the taste of Jalapenos. That is the way I feel about them.
I like most hot peppers for their heat and taste, but not Jalapenos.
A few years ago, I was following a friend out onto the lake to ice fish. Slipped forward and fell flat out. ugh! It’s like falling on steel. Absolutely no give whatsoever.
Sure hope you’re feeling better this morning.
Your homepage was fun to look at. :o)
Been thinking hard about what to do for a garden this year, if I want to attempt a raised bed or not. Last year, I tried various vegetables in pots on the deck. My biggest issue were the darn squirrels and chipmunks. They got all but one of my green peppers and took more than their share of cherry tomatoes. I can cage things up to keep squirrels out but not sure about chipmunks.
Any suggestions?
Not much
I doubt Waldo will be that enthused about the Brewers once he finds out what happened to Prince Fielder...
Me too, we sure need more rain. Today looks cloudy.
I know I couldn’t. I’d probably name them all.
LOLOL! Waldo will have to go back to our regular lackluster seasons.
I don’t know anyone who likes those critters. Once a year I use Over and Out. Sometimes I have to re-spread.
This year we’ve been invaded by wild verbina and they have long roots, beautiful flowers, but untrained. They even invaded one of my raised gardens, what a mess. It’s free now and waiting for plants.
Oh my, how awful. If the fluid needs removing, the nurse will give you and anelgesic to deaden the area. Prayers your knee will heal quickly.
Dallas grass and the long grass sounds like Johnson grass. Johnson grass have roots, long, long and deep roots. I use Roundup and completely cover from tip to ground. I had one devil of a time in one of my raised gardens. Evidently I’d put it right over some Johnson grass, and it took over the okra the first year. We carefully pulled the okra, at the end of the season I then cut each grass down the doused each stub with Roundup. Now I’m fighting thistles..with Roundup.
From what she’s written, I think she loves to hunt and I think you’re right.
Good news. YAAY
