A tourist from Tennessee waltzed into one of the most secure sites in the city and politely asked a cop if she could check her weapon.
Instead, she was dragged out in cuffs.
Now, Meredith Graves, 39, is facing at least three years in prison for thinking New Yorks gun laws are anything like those in the Bible Belt.
Graves, a fourth-year medical student, showed up at the memorial on Dec. 22 to pay her respects during a trip north for a job interview.
She didnt realize that the loaded .32-caliber pistol in her purse would be a problem until she saw a sign at the site that read, No guns allowed, sources said.
She remembered she had the gun on her, a source said. She walked up to a security guard and said, I have this gun. Where can I check it?
The guard told her that she was in luck because of law enforcement day and led her to another area.
When she got to that section, she asked another cop, We have this gun can we check it in here? We [my husband and I] are not law-enforcement.
Thats when she was arrested.
Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday. She is due in court on March 19.
Shell soon find out exactly how serious New York City is about illegal guns. The Manhattan DAs Office is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.
Mayor Bloomberg, with the help of the five district attorneys, has crusaded against the flow of illegal guns, especially from the South.

It is indeed a maze. If, as your tag line suggests, these laws were looked at by a reasonable man, the bulk of them would disappear from the books.
Our 2A rights have been chipped away, increment by increment. We have to get them back, one victory at a time.
The comments at the source are pretty encouraging...there are even NY’ers calling for a boycott of the city...LOL!
I seem to recall a case where the ruling was that an area of the law which was very complex, Byzantine in ints complexity, was Unconstitutional because of this very fact.
Again, where is the NRA in bringing up challenges based on precedent like this?
I am an NRA member (free membership at Cabela’s) but have always been disappointed by their lukewarm defense (if one could even call it that) of the 2A. They are constatntly patting themselves on the back, yet this woman may rot in prison for doing something guaranteed in the Constitution.
Job interview? Honey, you'd be better off starving than to work anywhere north of the Potomac River. L-rd have mercy, because that stinking dwarf Bloomberg won't...
Sounds REAL GOOD to me!!!!!
That sounds like something an arrogant SOB would say...
How ironic. If but one passanger or crewmember on each plane had a firearm the horror of 9/11 may have had a completely different outcome.
There is a simple answer to all these problems, unfortunately There is not a Real Man in any Authoritative position to make these decisions. quite simply do as follows:
At no time shall any resident from another State that does not recognize all license’s and permits issued by the State of Tennessee be permitted to exercise any permit or license issued by the State they reside in.
Arrest and JAIL every last person coming into the State from New York, furthermore if it is a cop, LIFE IN PRISON for Violating their State Laws on Aliens in possession of a Firearm.
She is not in as much trouble as America for having a bastard like Bloomberg in the Mayor’s Office.
Its not just NYC. The same thing happens in New Jersey, Maryland and many New England States.
A foreign culture and political ideology long ago took root in New York City and sent its tentacles out into New England, New Jersey and Maryland.
When I was growing up as a kid and living in New Jersey, I said America began at the Hudson River west. Now,still living in New Jersey I regretfully say America begins at the Delaware River west.
This culture which is ensconced in NYC and its colony states of Vermont, New Jersey, etc, is a threat to the entire nation and it doesn’t solely involve the Second Amendment. It extends across an entire spectrum of social issues.
Conservatives in the rest of America need to work with the conservatives still living in these states to do every thing we can to contain this contagion and wipe it out at its source.
LoL, not only arrogantsobs but someone who actually appreciates high culture would say that. Where I was raised the height of culture was the Grand Ole Opry. While I appreciate the Opry I appreciate Beethoven far more.
Those who do not particularly care about the very best are free not to. It isn’t for everyone.
The point is those things are what are available in the cities and more of them in NYC. That is a large reason that cities exist.
Such a “law” would be dead as soon as passed.
There are islands of excellence throughout the country. But none so comprehensive as in NYC. No other places have either of the Mets which are in a class by themselves: the Metropolitan Opera or the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I am not from NYC but cannot deny its virtues. In Chicago we have a better Symphony but that is about the only cultural superiority that comes to mind. Maybe our Blues scene as well.
Isn’t it interesting that the NRA started in NY state?
Most people with refined artistic tastes would never say such a boorish thing as that.
Handguns are not illegal for Bloomberg’s security detail.
Erring SOB.
