Dogs were probably useful as h*ll on the battlefield way back when. In the days when wars were fought with swords and spears, a quick dog with sharp teeth was probably as effective as most infantrymen. But as heroic and generally bad*ss as canines can be, there surely wasn't much use for them in war once guns and artillery became the norm.

She seemed gigantic to us as kids, the size of a pony, and despite a mop of fur and occasionally goofy facial expressions, she managed to somehow be stately. She was a good girl.

I live 2 blocks from my parents. Try to bring them at least 1 meal a day.
My mother has some dementia and a lymphoma cancer. The cancer seems in check but her memory is failing. My father had quadruple bypass surgery less than 1 year ago and other health issues. He is 86 and worked every day until this year. He farms and has a planting seed business.
Watching those two love birds is still incredible. Some things do not change.

My dear departed Torey-The-Dog, a Border Collie/Jack Russell Mix (I KNOW!) used to get very ANGRY when she heard the word “bitch”. So we started saying “The B Word” instead, till she figured THAT out too. She also figured out how to disconnect the shock-collar system so she could escape from the yard.
That was ONE SMART B-WORD, I tell Ya!
When the girl scouts came to our door my Beagle Buddy jumped the one holding the cookies and held her down til she gave him one. :)
You’re lucky - with that mix, she could probably have rewired the collar into a taser.
Wet nosed her into submission.
I see them at the dog park and just marvel at their size. I had a 175 lb. Old English mastiff as a kid, and he was a mammoth beast. I have, however, seen great danes at the dog park that make me wonder what God was thinking when He mixed a horse and a dog.

I’ll bet it was her Border Collie sense of responsibility and work ethic that prevented her EEvil Jack Russell side from doing EXACTLY THAT!
Not only was she smart, she was beautiful. I taught her how to sing...she could match my pitches! LOL!
If only she had had opposing thumbs, I could have taught her to play the guitar!
The dog that stole my heart was a deep liver colored Chocolate Lab with green eyes. He was from a field champion line bred down east of here near the coast of North Carolina, a working dog as opposed to the chunkier lines bred for show and exclusively for household pets. He was a rescue, too. Sad story that I won’t relate here, but he was found as a puppy under a manure bin with ringworm and his littermates were dead from Parvo. He had it too, spent weeks on an IV and had a tiny white patch on his paw from it for the rest of his life. That was one smart dog and he lived to retrieve. He had a high prey instinct, too. Fearsome guard dog around strangers, but would back down the second I told him it was OK. But, he was also a big old goof who loved to snuggle. I’ll miss him the rest of my life.

Jacks are scary smart. My little JR bitch of 18 years died this spring. She could figure out any abbreviation we used to avoid certain key words like "walk". We had to stop saying "W" because she would go ballistic and run for the door. The house is so quiet without her.
