I never liked them. I was a Zappa guy! No reconciling the two approaches.

Aww, sure there is - my iPhone has "Watermelon in Easter Hay" and "God Only Knows" on it and it all works. Good music is good music - if someone somewhere in the world is nodding their head or shaking their butt to it, odds are you can too.

Glad to see Brian Wilson out touring again - he looked happy and was making good music on the Smile tour.

Bruce Johnston even did backing vocals on Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.”

Hmmm. Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead.

And the last time I saw Brian Wilson perform in concert (I don't want to count the number of Beach Boys concerts I've seen), he got up from his white grand piano about eight measures into 'Caroline, No' and began slowly wandering around the stage. Somebody finally came from backstage and quietly led him off ...

Although about two months ago they finally released the band-approved version of the album Smile, recorded in 1966. You gotta make certain those things are right before you sell 'em, you know.

Interestingly, while the band itself deteriorated, by the early 80s Mike Love had actually improved as some vocalists tend to do with time. Don’t know about now.

Caught the BB at Gulfstream Park in 2004 at a Sunday afternoon concert on the racetrack. They sang my three favorite songs of all time: “Help Me Rhonda,” “Kokomo” and
“Barbara Ann.” Talk about the Trifecta!

Hmmm. Maybe Beach Geezers would be more accurate now.

It wasn't age then, and it wasn't recent. Brian was trying to get out of his "I'm a psycho whack-job" mode and go back to touring. This was in 1979 in New Haven, CT. It may have been his first concert tour since refusing to board the plane to London, when an apple-faced Oakie named Glen Campbell was called to take his place (later filled by Mike Johnston).

I've seen the Beach Boys in Houston, Atlanta (thrice), Austin, Boston, and San Diego since then, but never saw Brian on stage again. I've even seen the late Jan Berry on stage with Dean Torrence twice since I saw Brian Wilson.

Recently read the biography Catch a Wave, though, gave me a completely different insight into the boy and man.

..first the SMiLE Sessions, now the Reunion—a very nice tying together of many loose ends for America’s band IMO...
