Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players.
Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage, said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrixs Purple Haze and The Star-Spangled Banner as key tracks.

Alex Lifeson!!!!
Many born after he dies would disagree.
Read the reviews of him albums on Amazon.
Some of them offer interesting insights.
One of the greatest...would rate Stevie Ray Vaugan way up there too. Texas Flood
No. Chet Atkins or Les Paul.
A reasonable top ten list. Eddie Van Halen, the youngest, released first album 35 years ago.
Jimmy Page is # 3 behind Clapton. No way
Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jeff Beck.
Rolling Stone wouldn’t know “good” if it hit them in the face, even though Hendrix was indeed good. I wonder if Rory Gallagher is even on the list . . . ? I’m sure Ritchie Blackmore is on there, but probably behind Jimmy Page and Kurt Cobain . . . (and of course they have to quote bums like Tom Morello, who makes Johnny Ramone seem like Eddie Van Halen)
How can you consider a rock guitarist as the best guitar player ever.
Perhaps he is the best Rock guitar player.
I wouldn’t argue that point . To me Rock guitar is just noise.
Everything all the other hard rock guitarists did, no matter how good they were, Hendrix did first.
This was the only logical and proper choice.
Now we get to fight over places 2 to n.
Terry Kath should have been on that list, Supposedly Jimmy told Walter Parazaider that his Chicago band-mate was a better guitar player than himself...
You knew it would be Hendrix since it’s Rolling Stone without even having to look. Overrated in my book. His career was way too short to have been much, if any, of an influence on his contemporaries.
Naming Bill Frisell wouldn’t sell the magazine, would it?!
the top 10 is available to look at. I like Rory a lot. The RS list has famous people on it. And no one since the 1970s.
You’d think there’d be better guitarists in the last 35 years, but I really can’t argue this list too much.

Even Danny Cedrone’s?
Keith Richards ahead of Beck, Allman, and Townshend? Or for that matter, Richard Thompson, Lindsey Buckingham, David Gilmour, Johnny Marr.
Ridiculous.
I like Keith, but he’s a primarily a rhythm guitarist. Since Brian Jones died, he’s effectively been able to hide behind Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood.
you apparently haven’t dropped enough acid.
Nugent would not make the list since he is not much of a guitarist. Great conservative but just a mediocre player
