It’s been almost two years since I posted at Big Hollywood regarding the Top 10 Most Overrated Directors of All Time. I’ve had a chance to reflect and think about the crimes I committed in that post. And, to paraphrase Mr. Eko from the greatest TV show of all time, “Lost,” I ask no forgiveness because I have committed no sin … except leaving Spike Lee and Tim Burton off the list, that is.
So, because you all enjoyed that list so much, and because I apparently have a death wish, it’s time for another: The Top 10 Most Overrated Actors/Actresses of All Time

She was brilliant in Out of Africa.
The author either has his head up his rectum or is being intentionally controversial for ego, to establish himself or to provoke thought.
There are very few actors like a John Saxon who could transcend himself to become his roles. All actors are limited.
But almost every actor on this list does a fabulous job of advancing the stories he is in without intruding upon them.
The list is nonsense. He is completely wrong and I think he is just trying to get a rise out of people. What a maroon.
No kidding, Nicholas Cage... “If she is not a witch, she will not be yours to burn.” Give me a break.
Kilmer did the best Doc Holiday I’ve ever seen.
I recently saw his new film Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. It should get some Oscar nominations. The motion picture is on my top 5 list of films this year. Mr. Oldman and the director Tomas Alfredson were a part of a question and answer session afterward. I asked Mr. Oldman to sign the envelope shaped cardboard handout giving a background of the film and code names and terms used. He did a terrific job in the film. In addition, I got my picture taken with him and talked to him personally for a little bit before he had to go. Gary is extremely friendly. It made my day.
"Your" criteria make the list an opinion, not fact. You are of course welcome to share your opinion but to say "of all times" is a bit disingenuous on your part.
Barney Rubble was a great actor.
Costner’s best film easily was “Silverado”. He defined that role. He was perfect. I am no fan of Costner and feel he can’t carry a film himself as the primary actor. I thought he was terribly lightweight in The Untouchables as Eliot Ness. Anybody would have done better, but in Silverado, he was the perfect supporting actor. He just completely nailed that role.
Julia Roberts, can’t stand her, no talent, she in every movie made, I never watch them if she’s in them.

Kilmer is probably the most underrated actor out there.
I agree, I never ever liked Brando. I hated “Streetcar” when it came out, I hated his sleeze street thug attitude, and his mush mouth speaking.

Fascinating. These are the kind of things you are not allowed to say in this town and I agree with most of them!!
I’ve always hated Katherine hepburn’s acting.
He is right on with clooney and dicaprio but no one dares say this.
Jack Nicholson as terminally arrogant and menacing, well. Gee, wonder why?
The only two disagreements I have were that I actually thought Dustin Hoffman was funny in the 2 nd Focker movie, and I thought he did rain man justice. And Tom hanks was good in Philadelphia, where he plays the attorney with aids. I didn’t like the politics in the film but his acting was really good.
He does need to do a top 10 of underrated actors.
My vote is for my favorite actor, James woods. Genius at acting.
Methinks Ben Shapiro needs to stop having 3 martini lunches before writing his articles. The only names on that list that make sense are Clooney and DeCaprio. Clooney is just not that great an actor, and DeCaprio is wildly inconsistent.
As for the rest:
Dustin Hoffman - yes, I would agree his best days are behind him. Doesn’t make him overrated, though. Ratzo Rizzo, Tootsie, the counterfeiter in Papillon - these were all brilliant performances. It’s akin to saying Pacino is overrated because he did Cruisin’ after The Godfather and Serpico.
Tracy and Hepburn - Little Benny needs to learn the concept of “movie star”. Some old school actors were known for their ability to disappear into a role, etc. Others were known as movie stars. They played themselves in whatever part they had, but that’s what made them so good. Tracy and Hepburn were no different than Glenn Ford, Jimmy Stewart, or John Wayne in that respect. Go back to film class on this one, Benny.
Bill Murray - oh, WHATEVER. Murray has consistently been excellent in his roles - including the admittedly dry remake of Razor’s Edge. He deserved an Oscar nom for Groundhog Day and was very, very good in Lost in Translation.
Hanks and Streep - Get real. Hanks *has* become rather pretentious in recent years, but he’s still a top notch actor. Streep is nearly unmatched as a dramatic actress. Not liking a performance is not the same thing as a bad performance, Benny.
Nicholson - I would agree that Jack has been mailing it in for years. Does that make him overrated, or just lazy? His work in Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces, etc. was outstanding. More recent stuff, not so much. I’ll call this one a draw with Ben.
Where’s Nicholas Cage, btw? That guy is the single most inconsistent actor I’ve ever seen!
But he explains that to make the list you have to be widely considered a great actor. Julia Roberts never was.
