Apparently Brian Williams has a new show. Sandusky tried to smooth things over on it last night and it didn't go well.
This is a little sunnier so I figured I'd post it. It's a look at the MREs--or Meals Ready to Eat--that soldiers are stuck with. Pretty good.
I know they are made in Indiana and the guy who owns the company is a Republican
The C-Rats I had to eat in the mid 70s were dated in the late 50s. The eggs had a grayish tint to them and were awful. The ham wasn't bad and the peanut butter in the can would tie you up for a couple of days.
My first MRE in the early 80s had a package of meatballs and was quite good. Having to use my water to hydrate the rock hard potato cake was depressing but I would rather have the MRE than the C-Rat.
“When MREs first came out(in the 1980s) if you ate them they would PLUG you up. Have they fixed that?”
Sort of. The Tabasco helps you poop. They say the gum does, but I don’t think it does. Every once in a while you end up with the veggie burgers (no joke) that give you some major gas and make you poop. A bunch of them come with raisins and dried cranberries, which have the same effect. All-in-all, they will still stop you up.
They stopped doing the chocolate covered coffee beans (yep, they added those in for a while) and went to caffeinated mints. The mints are nasty. There is also the single serving Taster’s Choice coffee. I know some guys who actually mix it in their canteens. I just pop it in my mouth and drink a swig of water.
The one I hate that everybody else likes is the buffalo chicken. The package is full of the sauce, which is the consistency of water, and has tasteless chicken bits floating around in it. I do not understand why people think it tastes good.
I agree, there was something just wrong about those eggs!
I knew I wasn’t a smoker when I tried those free cigarettes and still didn’t like it. :-))
I recently REDISCOVERED instant mashed potatoes. They have come a long way from what we ate in college in the 60’s and the taste was on par with the real thing .
Have yet to eat an MRE I didn’t like. My all time favorites bits are the cheese spreads.
Amen. Have a lengthy supply myself, and rotate it regularly. They’re very good.
And the critics should keep in mind that they’re intended for combat conditions.
OH NO!
Next thing you know, the Koch Brothers will be forcing the CIA to flood minority communities with them, addicting everyone.
(I’m sure you didn’t imply that.)
I liked both. But then I will eat almost anything.
ping
Had a Lady Professor in college in the sixties who smoke Wings. She claimed she had a source where the military meal packages were produced. I was stumped when I found out the cigs were still filled with not so dry tobacco.
When I was in Vietnam MREs came onto the field. I liked Ham & Eggs and Corn Flake bars. Okay, fire away.
Hey buddy, what have got to trade for my ham and eggs??
Yeah, but fruit cocktail was money in the bank!
Oh, I don’t think I ever traded away fruit cocktail!
