Apparently Brian Williams has a new show. Sandusky tried to smooth things over on it last night and it didn't go well.
This is a little sunnier so I figured I'd post it. It's a look at the MREs--or Meals Ready to Eat--that soldiers are stuck with. Pretty good.
I realize that eating anything - over and over - will get old, even eating Krispy Kreme donuts day in and day out will get old.
But, honestly - I think MRE’s are pretty good. I stock up on them when I can find them, for camping and hiking trips. Considering they require no refrigeration, no culinary skills to eat, and last decades - what’s not to like?

MRE- Meals Rejected by Ethiopians
I agree. They aren’t Gourmet but they are good meals that can be made anywhere.... I like to get them for hiking or camping as well. There are better ones and awful ones.....Also like them because they remind me of my childhood and visiting my Uncle at Ft. Bragg.(He would always give me something neat) LOL

When MREs first came out(in the 1980s) if you ate them they would PLUG you up. Have they fixed that?
Well, I used to love the corned beef hash MRE. Ate it as many times as I could in the field. Never got sick of it. Sadly, it’s gone now.
Buy mine on-site here: http://www.militarydepotonline.com/
Sometimes at gun shows if at a good price (if you can find a case of 12 for $50, buy as many cases as you can).
http://www.mreinfo.com/ has more info about MREs than you imagine.
Yes, MREs are good. There is nothing bad about them (though some side items may be a bit...odd). Keep a few in my car, eat maybe one a month just to keep a bit of turnover going.
In basic training I was told this story from my Drill Sgt:
“During the Ethiopian famine..the US dropped millions of MRE’s
to the Ethiopian people...but because of the high calories,
and sodium content..their bodies went into shock at being uploaded with nutrients all in one shot, and a lot of them died shorty thereafter ...So when the US personnel on the ground would offer an MRE’s to the people in UN camps..they would reply NO,NO,No and violently wave their hands...Thus MRE’s became known as Meals refused by Ethiopians”
Nothing worse then opening up the cinnamon bun can and it was moldy. Yes, they did go moldy sometimes.
When the Marine Corps first started using them in the early to mid 80’s we went from pretty decent c-rations to pretty bad MREs. At that time, there were only about 8 different ones to choose from and they all stunk!! There was beef patty which was like a rock, the frankfurters which were terrible. I could go on...
Over the years, they got better and better. Things like the heating pouch made it feasible to heat them up quickly. The best addition was when they came out with putting tabasco sauce in with each meal. I was on a small camp out last year and got a fajita MRE. Yes, that’s right. You heard me say it. A fajita MRE!! It was like a gourmet meal that took a half hour to prepare and eat. It was pretty darn good also. My how times have changed.
One other thing about MREs. Has anyone else had the cold weather MRE’s? Got them once for cold weather training. They were awesome. Things like trail mix in them.
One word of caution is in order. Because in cold weather your body tends to burn a lot more calories, these things are loaded with calories. Something like 2000 calories on average per meal.
I think your Drill Sgt was pulling a fast one on you. We were calling them Meals rejected by Ethiopians for a long time. I’ve been on a couple humanitarian operations and they would never attempt to feed starving people MREs. They feed them this specialized porrage looking crap that gives them the nutrients they need.
When I was in the spaghetti and meat sauce was the best.
