Stun guns and tasers are the alternative. They are still, surprisingly, legal in most States, with some restrictions. See below:

State Taser/Stun Gun Restrictions .

One also has to be careful about carrying bladed weapons and laws involving that. In some cases, you could have less problems carrying a gun than a long knife. Pepper spray is an option that could cause some of the least legal issues.

The best thing is to know your local laws and become proficient with whatever you choose to carry.

A good Krav Maga class can teach you how to use almost anything as an effective defensive weapon.

I’ve watched too many YouTube videos to consider using a stun gun for anything but inflicting pain on a sneering protestor.

My backup is a collapsible baton.

I liked the big guy, the Viet Vet in some campy old go back to Nam movie who carried a grenade around his neck. Said something like, “if I get bored, I’ll pull the pin and check out the other side.”

I personally like the “Blast Knuckles”. Once you wrap your fingers around the holes, it would be difficult for an assailant to take from you, unlike other stuns guns that can be knocked out your hand.

Tip: If you buy this device, use some white-out to paint the ON switch on the back since it is black and blends into the rest of the gun. Easier turn on. In case you missed the video, the trigger mechanism is in the pointer finger hole, after you turned the front switch on.

Of course you can always go taser if you want to keep a certain distance away from your assailant, but they are big bulky and you have to aim, and not something you carry in your purse or pocket.

Again, the “Blaster” item is legal in most States, with some restrictions. Check out your local laws, but this and other stun guns are excellent deterents if carrying a gun is not an option.

I like to throw knives :D

Up close and personal, I go for Sypderco Harpy.

For pesky dogs, bears, Occupiers, commies, and or hippies - Bear mace!

If all else fails - Tomahawk go!

That’s interesting...I live in IL (sadly, the last CCW holdout), and did not realize tasers are legal. Better hope our idiot legislature/governor don’t read this or they will be! Not as good an option in some ways, but better in others.

Good thread

I did a little research/testing of alternate self-defense products for my wife to carry from her car into work. After considering a couple of products and trying a few out, this is what I settled on:

Mace Pepper Gel Night Defender

This is a pepper gel that that is effective out to about 10 or 15 feet. I decided to go with the gel instead of the spray to minimize the risk of her getting blow back or if she had to use it in close quarters.

The gel completely coats the face and it will grind deeper into the skin when the bad guy goes to wipe his face. (I am taking them at their word, I did not personally verify that claim).

After the fact the product coats the skin of the bad guy(s) with a UV dye for later identification if necessary.

You can get a cheap crossbow for under a hundred dollars. But it will give you one chance to put a bolt through a bad guy. It is much nicer to have at least a few backup rounds.

My friend has a 45 caliber air rifle that shoots 180gr bullets at over 750fps when filled to 3000psi. It is bolt action and it will shoot several rounds before losing a lot of it's oomph. We cast our own projectiles. It is not considered a firearm anywhere that I know of. The first several rounds all pack considerably more energy than a .22 cal rifle.

My friends has a different gun than the one pictured below. His has a larger air resevoir and it costs more. I couldn't find a picture online. I have never purchased anything from airgundepot.com, but included the link so you could see specs and approximately what they cost.

Bear Spray.
There has not been a case of it failing to stop ANY bear... it is amazingly effective. Breathing hurts, your eyes hurt, it can make you sick (probably from the heavy runny mucus that occurs immediately after getting sprayed with it)
Good up to 30 or so feet, but don't spray it in an enclosed room unless you have an exit pre-planned.
Works on nearly all animals, including I have heard, alligators.

Oh, and it is a nearly completely harmless chemical wise, it is made of the active ingredient in peppers. Water gets rid of it and it is gone.

Trust me though, you (or your adversary) will need a lot water.. a shower is best.
But figure anyone sprayed directly with it for about an hour is effectively out of action.

For alternatives to fire-arms, consider:
#1: cable belt. Steel cable is purchased at Home Depot. Attach hooks or buckle+clasp. Wear in place of leather belt around your waist. Unhook and swing to use. Holds up your pants when not in combat use.
#2: kevlar. Used police body armor sells for as little as $50 per panel online. Don’t forget your defense!
#3: deer urine. Purchased at any hunting store. Break the glass and no one will be able to breath within 20 feet.
#4: sling shot. Every rock or piece of broken concrete/brick is your ammo. Never run out of “bullets.”
#5: pepper spray. Doesn’t have a problem with battery life as do stun guns. Doesn’t have a problem with being recovered after dropped into water as do stun guns.
#6: ice pick. Cheap. Easy to conceal. Utterly deadly.
#7: Walking stick. Alternative: umbrella.
#8: horse whip.
#9: caltrops. Alternatives: throwing stars, throwing knives, and boomerangs.
10: box cutter.

Honorable mention: large attack dogs
