Things are getting dicey. While some States allow gun open carry and others allow concealed or both, many good folks just don't want to have to carry all the time.
While I wish all good citizens would carry, here is an alternative for those who still would defend themselves and those innocents around them.
Mindset.
Everything is a weapon.
One also has to be careful about carrying bladed weapons and laws involving that. In some cases, you could have less problems carrying a gun than a long knife. Pepper spray is an option that could cause some of the least legal issues.
The best thing is to know your local laws and become proficient with whatever you choose to carry.
A good Krav Maga class can teach you how to use almost anything as an effective defensive weapon.
A really ugly woman.
I’ve watched too many YouTube videos to consider using a stun gun for anything but inflicting pain on a sneering protestor.
My backup is a collapsible baton.
I liked the big guy, the Viet Vet in some campy old go back to Nam movie who carried a grenade around his neck. Said something like, “if I get bored, I’ll pull the pin and check out the other side.”
I personally like the “Blast Knuckles”. Once you wrap your fingers around the holes, it would be difficult for an assailant to take from you, unlike other stuns guns that can be knocked out your hand.
Tip: If you buy this device, use some white-out to paint the ON switch on the back since it is black and blends into the rest of the gun. Easier turn on. In case you missed the video, the trigger mechanism is in the pointer finger hole, after you turned the front switch on.
Of course you can always go taser if you want to keep a certain distance away from your assailant, but they are big bulky and you have to aim, and not something you carry in your purse or pocket.
Again, the “Blaster” item is legal in most States, with some restrictions. Check out your local laws, but this and other stun guns are excellent deterents if carrying a gun is not an option.
I like to throw knives :D
Up close and personal, I go for Sypderco Harpy.
For pesky dogs, bears, Occupiers, commies, and or hippies - Bear mace!
If all else fails - Tomahawk go!
That’s interesting...I live in IL (sadly, the last CCW holdout), and did not realize tasers are legal. Better hope our idiot legislature/governor don’t read this or they will be! Not as good an option in some ways, but better in others.
In the right hands this Khukuri is a prettu good substitute for a gun
Yep. But the mind is the best. If the mindset isn't there, nothing else will suffice.
“Mindset”. Have no clue what you mean.
Of course, if you're trained and practice. This article is for those who need self-defense without going through months of hand-to-hand and/or are older.
Excellent info. Thanks.
That’s my favorite weapon and tool.
Mindset is what makes everything a weapon. Otherwise everything is just another object.
“One also has to be careful about carrying bladed weapons and laws involving that. In some cases, you could have less problems carrying a gun than a long knife.”
Yes. Some States don’t allow carry for anything over a 6” blade...or is that 4”?
“Pepper spray is an option that could cause some of the least legal issues.”
I don’t believe “pepper spray” is a good deterrent. There’s been too many examples of intoxicated bad guys who kept on coming after getting sprayed. The historical example is Rodney King.
“The best thing is to know your local laws and become proficient with whatever you choose to carry.”
Absolutely.
“A good Krav Maga class can teach you how to use almost anything as an effective defensive weapon.”
Yes, but what about us older folks who can’t train in that martial art? I’m 61 and don’t have the energy or strength for that type of training, much less a frail woman. Plus, it teaches you to maim, when you may only need to deter. A zap with a stun gun or taser will put the punk down, and give you the opportunity to run...that’s also something Krav Maga teaches. Who needs a lawsuit for putting out someone’s eye when you can just zap them and leave?
