These days, if a stuffed animal's plastic eye so much as wiggles, that toy is recalled faster than you can say "class action lawsuit." Back in the day, though, child safety consisted of just getting out of the way and letting natural selection do its thing. If a kid was too dumb to play with a toy the right way, well, he'd just have to learn to get along with one less eye.

LOL, I loved those things. We’d place em under the pegs of a toilet lid. When sat on, they blow and scatter sand on the back of the legs. Or lay em on the road for cars to drive over. Boom, flat tire? Great fun!!

I had a little steam engine. Add water, add a little fuel cake and light it, after a couple minutes, that engine was a screamin driving a piston and wheel faster than ever. Blow the steam whistle. A nice hot little boiler bomb. No shields, no nothin.

Yeah, today even the preoistion “of” would be considered politically incorrect by the professional offendees.
More importantly, that is a wonderful image. Thanks!

I had two of those. Good for plastic armymen when you couldn’t go outside and use slingshots.

I have a set of lawn darts and you can have them when you pry them from my cold dead hands.Same here, right up in the attic. It's been a few summers since I broke them out for a family party, but threads like this one are a healthy reminder.

Thanks!
For me, there is something undeniably honest, wholesome and positive about those old images.

I don’t think I ever saw, much less wore, a seat belt until I was about twelve. And the dashboards were made out of steel back then.
Somehow we survived.
To: EyeGuy
Agreed. There’s freedom, responsibility, and self-reliance on display there. Eighty years ago, those images wouldn’t have been remarkable. From today’s perspective, they truly are.
