Obama’s Disquieting Heroic Fantasies
Commentarymagazine.com ^ | September 26, 2011 | Peter Wehner

Posted on 09/27/2011 11:18:09 AM PDT by ransomnote

At a speech before the Congressional Black Caucus this weekend, President Obama told the crowd, “I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain.” He also told the CBC to “take off your bedroom slippers” and “put on your marching shoes.” And he scolded them to “stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying.”

I have written before about Obama’s deep, almost desperate, need to portray himself as the opposite of what he is, to conceive of himself in a way that is at odds with reality. We have seen it in all sorts of areas, including claiming himself to be a voice of civility, portraying himself as a champion of bi-partisanship, lecturing others about profligate spending, and saying he is the only responsible “adult” in Washington. Now we see this habit in a new arena – this time, the president as Obama the Stoic, a man so committed to “pressing on” for the cause of social justice he just doesn’t have time to feel sorry for himself. Indeed, he has now decided to sermonize to others not to complain, not to grumble, and to “stop crying.”

This is akin to John Edwards hosting a weekend seminar on the importance of marital fidelity.

If there has been a president in my lifetime who has felt more sorry for himself – who has laid the blame for his failures on more people (George W. Bush, the Congressional GOP, the Tea Party, conservative talk radio hosts, millionaires and billionaires) and more things (ATMs, Japanese tsunamis, the Arab Spring, Fox News, Wall Street, et cetera) – I can’t think of who that might be. As the wheels on the Obama presidency come off, as his record of ineptness becomes more indisputable, Obama is becoming more intemperate, more aggrieved... SNIP

“stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying.”

actually, it was “stop complainin', stop grumblin', stop cryin'.”

With that particular gathering you get more street credit if you speak like an ignorant fool.

LOL! My husband was barefoot all summer when he was a boy, but he did live in southern Massachusetts. :)

Same here. I didn’t have a pair of shoes on from the last day of school until the first day of school, except for when we went to the weekly family dinner on Saturday and church on Sunday.

” - - - as his record of ineptness becomes more indisputable, Obama is becoming more intemperate, more aggrieved... “

Thanks for this post. It has been my impression for at least a year that Obama has been making all of his speeches to himself. His recent speech to the Black Caucus the other day is an excellent example of his mental detachment from reality.

He knows that his is unqualified, incompetent, intellectually inferior, and incapable of learning to be even slightly competent in the job that he was so foolishly voted into. So he compensates by standing on his portable soapbox at any street corner and publicly lecturing himself. It is a sad sight to see.

He seems incapable of listening to the advice of experts. He says one thing, and then changes his mind when the time for a decision has long past. Libya is a good example of that.

I have ridiculed Obama at every opportunity because of the harm that his socialist policies will do to my grandchildren. But now, on a serious note, I believe that Obama should resign before this year ends.

The last Presidential meltdown was the sad spectacle of Nixon. Now we are seeing a similar pattern with Obama. For the good of the Nation and his family, it is time for Obama to resign.

I think house shoes and bedroom slippers are essentially the same thing. It depends on what’s said in your neck of the woods. Kind of like soda or pop/

I think it is more of a monetary difference than a geographical difference. I have traveled to every state in this Union and I have heard the difference from soda, pop, "Coke," etc... But I have never heard anyone switching between house shoes and bedroom slippers.

The likes of Hugh Hefner, Bill Gates, Barrack Obama, Warren Buffet have "bedroom slippers."
Normal people have "house shoes."

I don’t see that happening today. It’s really too bad that children no longer have that kind of freedom and fun.

I don’t know a single person who refers to their “house shoes.” And most people I know are normal. :-)

My husband has a habit of calling flip-flops “shower shoes.” That really bugs me.

We always said “Coke” growing up in Texas, but we always meant Dr. Pepper!!

While in the Marine Corps, my buddies and I had a lengthy discussion about this very subject. We were under a vehicle working and a guy ask if I wanted a Coke. I said, "Yes, make it a Dr. Pepper." He said, "HUH?!?" Then he asked if I wanted a Coke again and I repeated my reply. He had a 12-pack of Cokes and was offering them out. Of course, what ensued was a long, funny, team-building conversation between all of us about different dialects and phrases.

This was just stunning. You have to wonder if he was somehow lecturing himself.

Very good analysis.
Thank you for that.

ABSOLUTELY! If 7-11 had a "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" policy when I was growing up, they would lose over 75% of their in-store sales!

Your husband former military? Because, when I was in the Marine Corps, that is what they called flip-flops.

And speaking of fantasy, it takes some pretty fantastical gonads to sermonize to people who are out of work, out of investments, out of homes, etc. while your wife sports $50K baubles on her wrist, gratis.

He was speaking to the Congressional Black Caucus.

Full of legislators and their staffers, DOEnergy, DOEducation, HHS, EPA, etc., "civil servants."

Oh that's hilarious. My squad had that exact same conversation in Kuwait during the first Gulf War.

Coke, soda, pop .... just a few of the dialect terms for carbonated sweet beverages. :)

Verbal 'tells' to spot the Texan: "I have a Coke, make it a Dr Pepper"
"fixin' to"
"y'all"

You guys have his narcissism pegged.

Interestingly, it arises from 2 false and opposite self-images.

Narcissists actually loathe themselves.
“He knows that his is unqualified, incompetent, intellectually inferior, and incapable of learning to be even slightly competent...”

Coupled with a skank and a thug for parents, it’s probable there was “abandonment” or abuse...(O’s predilection for gay sex and drugs speaks to this also). This provides impetus for creating the other false self image...what most people think of “Narcissist”. It HAS to be the opposite of self-loathing. The grandiose-”won”.

In short, Obama careens between two equally false and diametrically opposed self-images.

There’s no “there” there.

He is an empty suit. A rude construct. False. Forever stuck in puberty, where the splitting likely began.
He lies to all precisely because he can never admit the truth to himself.

Yup. You hit the nail on the head. I’m a Minnesota gal who happens to be married to a Texan who was transplanted here. And yes, after nearly 15 years of marriage he still calls me a “yankee!” :-)

My squad had that exact same conversation in Kuwait during the first Gulf War.

What unit? I was with Charlie Company, 2nd LAI Battalion, 2nd Marine Division!
We went through the berm near the Al Walfrah oil fields. We played cat & mouse and ran reconnaissance along the Kuwaiti border for three days before the ground war even started!
