Vanity: Firing new M1 Garand for first time

Posted on 09/23/2011 3:41:03 PM PDT by cavdad

Bought a M1 Garand last weekend and shooting it for the first time tomorrow. Range is supplying military grade ammo this time. In the future where is a good place on the web or in Raleigh, North Carolina to buy military surplus 30-06 ammo?

By the way, the rifle is a Springfield Armory 1954 model with proper cartouche and ordinance stamp. No mismatching stock or parts.

OMG!

Who left it ~lay~??

I shot 3 rabid coons last week and he’s *still* got me out in the front yard, hunting for the 9mm cases!

LOL

The only thing that was going in the river was bullets.

Slam Fires most always happen loading that first round.

Always use a clip or a sled.

And keep that thumb out of harm’s way.

Graf and Sons is a well respected online ammo supplier - and you can’t beat their low shipping rates.

Keep it always.

Never sell it.

May God forgive me for the M-1s and the 1903s I traded away for more “modern” weaponry.

If you go the reloading route, be very, very, careful. The Garand is very finicky as to what loads work correctly. Use only Boxer primable military brass and the right primers. If the wrong load is used, the good is, the action will not work as to ejection and loading, the bad is, that a wrong load can wreck things very severely.

In short, always only use only powders, primers and bullet weights that are approved for reloading Garand 30-06 ammunition.

Sounds like you have a gem. Only US Army rifle I felt comfortable shooting. Never did enjoy as much accuracy with the M14 or M16.

If not careful, the term “M1 thumb” will come to have great meaning.

Make sure you have a clean/clear bore and if you have some good-quality grease (original was Lubriplate), grease up the operating rod camway/bolt lug and the slots in the receiver which the bolt rides in.

Start with the rear sight centered (use the aligment marks at the base of the receiver) using the left-hand knob on the rear sight and raise the rear sight 6 clicks from all the way down using the right sight knob. This is a good starting position to zero your weapon. Also make sure that your front sight screw is tight and your gas plug is tight.

Use good quality US ammo for your first try and be safe..
