Bee Nest Burning Backfires In Walla Walla
KXLY ^ | September 5, 2011

Posted on 09/06/2011 10:30:28 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Firefighters say residents used a torch-like device earlier Sunday to burn a bee nest in some stacked railroad ties located behind 36 Lenore Court in Walla Walla, but their plan backfired and burned a nearby garage.

The residents didn't think the flame was that hot however the railroad ties actually sat smoldering for several hours, then later ignited. The fire quickly spread through some dry grass to a nearby garage, which then caught fire.

Firefighters from Walla Walla County District 4, along with city firefighters, responded to the fire around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Creosote is nasty stuff in more ways than one.

They could have found a beekeeper who would be happy to remove the hive free of charge.

At least they don’t have to worry about the bees getting in to their garage.

I HATE it when that happens!

The residents didn't think the flame was that hot ...

Apparently the residents are new to the concept of fire!

I fought yellowjackets all weekend in my yard and never came close to burning my house down.

Does creosote burn well, and does it give off a bad odor? Reason I ask is that I’ve got some leftover rail ties from a gravel drive I just built, and was planning to use them for campfire wood.

I dunno, but I suspect that RR ties are impregnated with coal tar creosote and it contains lots of bad(unhealthy) chemicals.

I wouldn't want to breath the smoke (when I was a kid I worked one summer building piers using creosoted piles and timbers. My arms burned for days after getting coated from casual contact during the sunny summer days.)

Most plants that made those creosote ties are now Superfund sites - just saying.

I’m no enviro nut, but I don’t burn any scraps that have been treated, painted, or glued (plywood, pressed, etc,)

Funniest thing I ever saw was my ex and the neighbor dumping 5 gallons of gas down a yellow-jacket hole after dark.

When they finally got a lit match down it, there was a long moment of *nothing* and then WHOOOOOOOMP! as flames and thousands of seriously p*ssed off bees came roaring out of the hole in the ground.

It looked like Dante’s Inferno meets the Two Stooges.

As I sat safely inside the truck watching all this comedy of errors, I nearly died laughing.

I warned ‘em not to do it but nobody listens to me.

[Who knew flaming bees could still sting?]

:)

They might make a good signal fire - I imagine it would be dark smoke like burning tires!

And what is it with Washington? There was an article a week or so ago where they got called to a brush fire. After putting it out they found a guy dead in the middle of it with a torch. His wife said he had gone out to “take care of some gophers”.

Don't burn them. They will give off some nasty smoke that you don't want to breath.
